Perry: Marines in video are 'kids,' not criminals [Obama: Ft. Hood Shooting = Workplace Violence]
Sacramento Bee ^ | January 15, 2012 | ANNE FLAHERTY

....[Gov. Rick] Perry's comments put him at odds with Sen. John McCain, the top Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, who said the images could damage the war effort.

"The Marine Corps prides itself that we don't lower ourselves to the level of the enemy," McCain said when asked about Perry's position. "So it makes me sad more than anything else, because ... I can't tell you how wonderful these people (Marines) are. And it hurts their reputation and their image."

No one has been charged in the case, but officials in the U.S. and abroad have called for swift punishment of the four Marines. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said last week that he worried the video could be used by the Taliban to undermine peace talks.

A military criminal investigation and an internal Marine Corps review are under way. The Geneva Conventions forbid the desecration of the dead.

Texas Gov. Perry said the Marines involved should be reprimanded but not prosecuted on criminal charges.

"Obviously, 18-, 19-year-old kids make stupid mistakes all too often. And that's what's occurred here," Perry told CNN's "State of the Union."

He later added: "What's really disturbing to me is the kind of over-the-top rhetoric from this administration and their disdain for the military."

Later appearing on the same show, McCain said he disagreed.

"We're trying to win the hearts and minds" of the Afghanistan population, he said. "And when something like that comes up, it obviously harms that ability."

Like Perry. He sounds better and better every day. But he’s fighting a big political establishment - the Bush/Romney/Christie Gang.

An accurate contrast.

We can kill the Taliban, but we're not allowed to "hate" them.

You see it is OK to hate Chrisitians, Constitutionalists, and legitimate authority, but not ROP miscreants. The left wants our military to return home, so those funds can be retargeted at building Obama's National Security Force.

This should have been dealt with by the company commander and sergeant major and resulted in not much more than a hearty “don’t do that again, dumba**es!” and a few weeks KP.

The fact that idiots like McCain are turning this into a national political brouhaha is just a sad comment on our country today.

Their only mistake, video.

Agreed. After everything our nation and military have had to endure fighting against those simian knuckledraggers, and somehow THIS is a cause for "outrage?" Sorry... doesn't pass the test.

Urinate on The American Flag, you're a "Constitutionalist"
Urinate on a Police Car, you're a "Freedom Loving 99%er"
Urinate on the Taliban Piece Of Crap That Just Tried To Kill
You & Your Fellow Marines, you're a Villain."

Exactly. A local, one-time ass-chewing (more about being videoed than anything else) would've been sufficient. Unfortunately, in today's uber-PC world, nearly everything has to have national and international political consequences.

If McCain thinks we are going to win the hearts and minds of anyone in Afghanistan he is a lunatic.

IMO, McCain has no credibility. Anyone who admonishes the public to "not fear an Obama Presidency" -- IN THE MIDDLE OF A CAMPAIGN -- doesn't deserve more than disdain.

Thank you, Gov. Perry.

War is hell. It should be. If the poor dead jackwagons don’t want to be pissed on, they can always leave the field of battle.

We should be ADVERTISING that if we kill you, we won’t respect you after you’re dead, either.

You got that right.

The Bush-Rove-GOP Establishment Machine are getting payback because Gov. Rick Perry wouldn't step aside in the name of "Party Politics," as he was told, in order for retiring Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (who had done her RINO duties well for so long in the U.S. Senate) could move back home and plant her RINO butt in the Texas Gov. seat with ease. Instead, Bush-Rove had to run ($$$) a primary challenge which they lost to Perry by 20pts (Perry brought in a GOP super majority in the general election).

Now Perry is being made an example of (Nicki Haley isn't going to fight for conservatism and incur their wrath). Isn't it interesting that Hutchison came out immediately after Perry announced his run for the GOP nomination to publicly state she could not endorse him because he did not have business experience (he's only the chief executive of the 13th largest economy and has been for over a decade) --- so she was signaling to those who know the drill -- get your heads straight and get with Romney -- or at least, don't endorse Perry if you want to get any party help.

Good luck with that when the people that you're dealing withs idea of 'winning' is for you to be dead.

McCain is an idiot. You can't fight a dirty war from a moral high ground.

It's the same reason Establishment Republicans have been losing the political war at home for generations.

It’s reminds me of how we don’t see images of the 9-11 Towers much, but we get all wrapped up in arguing about the right for a “Mosque” to be built in the shadow of the hole left in ground where 2000 Americans were murdered.

Everything is turned on its head.

Exactly. The Afghans are barbaric, illiterate, ignorant stone-age people. Even the ones supposedly "on our side" (a dubious term) aren't really much better than the Taliban. Any Afghan with the potential to effect real change in Afghanistan left Afghanistan a long time ago.

” John McCain, the top Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, who said the images could damage the war effort.”

Nonsense. These people already hate everything American and want us destroyed.
What hurts our war effort is our own Government not even be willing to use the term terrorists and not admitting that we ARE at war with islam..

I always have a problem with people who refer to our men and women in uniform as “kids.” They are men and women. Clearly, Perry is right on substance and these men should be left alone. It sickened me to hear Hillary Clinton (who, as we all know, wanted so much to join the army as a youth but bad eyesight kept her out of boot camp and the front lines) screeching about this fake atrocity.

I so wish they hadn’t videotaped the damn thing. And I wish they had heaved a whole bunch of bacon at them.

Sen. McCain,

You don’t go after their “hearts and minds” — all they understand is force.

This is exactly the opposite of winning their “hears and minds.”

It’s igniting their confidence that they can kill us.
