In an unprecedented case of gross malfeasance, it appears that the Captain of the giant cruise ship, Costa Concordia, purposely ordered his crew to CHANGE course, in a maritime version of a fly-by for entertainment purposes:
Questions also swirled about why the ship had navigated so close to the dangerous reefs and rocks that jut out off Giglio's eastern coast, amid suspicions the captain might have ventured too close while carrying out a maneuver to entertain tourists on the island."
As a result of steering the ship off-course, it unexpectedly hit a reef. (Captain Shettino insists these rocks where uncharted so most likely the result of sabotage, and additionally accused his helmsman of acting stupidly by getting too close to the uncharted rocks.) When the ship hit the reef it ripped a large, gapping hole in the hull of his ship, breaching its integrity. At this point the giant ocean-faring vessel started taking on ballast, listing dangerously portside (left); which is to say, it was sinking.

Stealing!
It’s hardly a job; more of an adventure.
He’s gone from supertankers to cruise ships? Who knew????
Where else can he be cap and drink to his hearts content legally?
I bet he could have done a better job of squeezing the Exxon Valdez by those rocks than that Schettinohead.
Yes, and we’ve been submerged in salt water for about 3 years now. The clock is ticking.
I hope Carnival sinks also. It would serve them right for overextending themselves and getting involved in a ship that they had little or no control over.
About 120 feet, but not much further out it drops down to about 240 feet.
Found this on a ship forum.
“Just read a report that the Costa CEO is blaming the Captain saying he took the ship close to the island to more or less show off to a friend. My God, that’s like the Captain of a loaded 747 flying under the Golden Gate Bridge to “show off”. Possible to do but not really a good idea. Hard to imagine someone being so irresponsible. “
What a mess. The British newspapers have done a great job covering this. Interviews were amazing and well, in some cases, humorous. Several people saw the Captain and crew "putting to sea" (in a life raft-before them!) Boy, were THEY pissed!
You’d think the captain would get on the PA system and announce the wonderful sight to starboard, just before ramming the ship so that it fell over to port.
How they entrusted a ship like that to a captain like that, unbelievable.
You should watch the Doctor Who episode called “Voyage Of The Damned” that involves the starship Titanic. Has the same basic plot but with a twist or two.

Stealing? Stealing what?
I heard that joke many, many Moons ago!
So many unanswered questions and not a whole lot of investigative reporting going on (by the lamestream media).
Cruise ships like the Concordia are very large. I have been on some Royal Caribbean and Carnival ships and those ships are very large with an absolutely incredible amount of food and beverages aboard. Everytime I go on a cruise, I gain about 10-15 pounds because you are always eating, eating, eating. I remember going on deck for midnight buffet and stuffing myself with raw oysters, lobster tails, scallops, etc. But the ship never runs out of food.
There are also a huge number of crew on these ships. Just about a 3-1 ratio of passengers to crew. So for every 3,000 passengers, there are 1,000 crew members filling the fruit baskets, pouring the champagne, putting mints on top of pillows and about a 1,001 other important tasks that all too many passengers take for granted.
I always try to tip very well at the end of the cruise. It's a shame, but I don't think the crew of the Concordia were tipped very well on this particular voyage. I'm thinking that as the passengers (and presumably captain) fled the ship, tipping the crew on the way to the lifeboats did not cross their minds.
Here is a very good update on this story, copy and paste it in the URL section:

Nope, he was paid off by Hollywood hungry for another smash hit like Titanic!
When they make a movie of this , they should get Obama to play the part of the Captain.
He has played Golf and vacationed in Hawaii while a whole country sinks.
Interesting tidbit from the article: Cruise ships are supposed to pass that town (Giglio) at least four miles offshore. Instead, this ship was steered just 300 yards off the coastline - evidently to impress the family of his head waiter who lived there.

Which is what happened the prior Saturday in the Bahamas.
Hard-partying cruise ship where the dancing ended when crew ran aground off Bahamas.
I'm supposed to be on this very ship at the end of February.
