As many as 10 fake iPad 2s, all made of slabs of modeling clay, were recently sold at electronic stores in Vancouver, British Columbia. Best Buy and Future Shop have launched investigations into how the scam was pulled off.

The tablet computers, like most Apple products, are known for their sleek and simple designs. But there's no mistaking the iPad for one of the world's oldest "tablet devices." Still, most electronic products cannot be returned to stores. For the the stores and customers to be fooled by the clay replacements, the thieves must have successfully weighed out the clay portions and resealed the original Apple packaging.

The returned fakes were restocked on the shelve and sold to new, unwitting customers.

This seems to happen a lot. There are more than a few stories of people buying "refurbished" laptops, for example, at Fry's Computer stores in Silicon Valley with hard drives full of data from the previous customer.

they’d be looking at a lawsuit if they didn’t accept a return on that deal. I once purchased a power drill as a gift for my son.............imagin our horror when we opened the box and there was nothing in it. The store believed us, but we, of course had no way to prove it.

Here with modeling clay, you can show something at least. Even if they say you are making it up and put the clay in yourself, they can tell that to the jury

It happened to me several years ago at Best Buy. I bought a supposedly new computer and tried to collect the rebate only to find out that it had already been collected by the previous owner, who collected the rebate and then returned the computer to the store, where Best Buy resold it as new.

I made quite a scene at the store, to convince them at last to give me a real new computer as a replacement for the used one they sold me as new. They finally agreed but I thought I might get arrested while there due to the hell I was raising.

I don't do business with Best Buy anymore.

YEP! I bought a SSHD from Fry’s and had all the personal photos from the previous 18-year-old Asian girl on there.

When I returned it and described the previous owners, their reaction was amazing:

They were aroused and did NOT conceal it. I was amazed.

“In other news, Apple has announced that it will be marketing a special version of the iPad to Mexican-American customers. It will be called the ‘Tabula Raza.’”

LOL!!!

I was having a hard time deciding, but when I saw the capabilities side by side, I knew I had to go with the Stone. (But should I wait for the new Stone v.2.0?)
