The NYPD is stepping up their war against illegal guns, with a new tool that could detect weapons on someone as they walk down the street.
But is it violating your right to privacy?
Police, along with the U.S. Department of Defense, are researching new technology in a scanner placed on police vehicles that can detect concealed weapons.
“You could use it at a specific event. You could use it at a shooting-prone location,” NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly told CBS 2′s Hazel Sanchez on Tuesday.
It’s called Terahertz Imaging Detection. It measures the energy radiating from a body up to 16 feet away, and can detect anything blocking it, like a gun.
And the idea is causing quite the uproar on both sides of the privacy issue.

Police Commissioner Kelly said the scanner would only be used in reasonably suspicious circumstances and could cut down on the number of stop-and-frisks on the street.
But the New York Civil Liberties Union is raising a red flag.
“It’s worrisome. It implicates privacy, the right to walk down the street without being subjected to a virtual pat-down by the Police Department when you’re doing nothing wrong,” the NYCLU’s Donna Lieberman said.

You’re right to worry - we are there.
They’re welcome to point that thing at me...just as soon as they show me the search warrant, supported by oath or affirmation of my accuser, and particularly describing the thing(s) to be seized which I am accused of having on my person.
Of course, once I’ve read the warrant, I’ll willingly empty my pockets for them, or take off my jacket, or whatever they like. Show me the warrant and we’ll all get along just fine.

Well then, that’s good enough for me! Just like citizens believed that only 2000 people would be subject to the income tax when it was passed, or that Social Security would not be raided, and countless other promises from the government.
this is no different than that police using tech scanners to look into homes without a warrent.

Why don't you read the article? The source of the radiation is the person themselvees, because they happen to be at a normal temperature. They're just looking at a long wavelength region of the subjects' own black-body emmisions. \
IOWs there are no health effects and any claims that there are amounts to rubbish.

You don’t understand. In NYC, the Constitution, especially the 2nd amendment, means nothing. People are now routinely arrested for carrying fully licensed weapons, even with CCW licenses. They don’t give a good goddamn.

It's fun to watch as the Mayor takes control of the daily lives of the citizens. Yes you hear the complaints. But he is still there. And every few months he comes up with a new way to intrude into their lives.

But a new generation of cameras are set to appear that not only record terahertz waves but also bombard us with them. And if our exposure is set to increase, the question that urgently needs answering is what level of terahertz exposure is safe.
