DES MOINES, Iowa -- A Des Moines man has been arrested after police say he used, or tried to use, the identity of Iowa Secretary of State Matt Schultz in a scheme to falsely implicate Schultz in perceived unethical behavior in office.

Zachary Edwards was arrested Friday and charged with identity theft.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety issued a news release saying Schultz's office discovered the scheme on June 24, 2011 and notified authorities.

More at FR Red State thread:

Former Obama staffer arrested in Iowa Secretary of State identity theft investigation...former Obama ’08 staffer – one Zach Edwards, formerly with the 2008 Obama campaign in Iowa and currently up until the arrest working for Link Strategies*, a company affiliated with Sen. Tom Harken (D, IA) – has been arrested for identity theft. The Iowa Department of Public Safety puts it fairly succinctly: “According to the Criminal Complaint, on June 24, 2011, Edwards fraudulently used, or attempted to use, the identity of Iowa Secretary of State Matt Schultz and/or Secretary Schultz’s brother, Thomas Schultz, with the intent to obtain a benefit, in an alleged scheme to falsely implicate Secretary Schultz in perceived illegal or unethical behavior while in office.” In other words: Edwards is accused of trying to pretend to be Schultz in order to get Schultz in trouble. The crime is listed as an ‘Aggravated Misdemeanor,’ but if convicted Edwards could face jail time.

Matt Schultz is a Republican, in case anybody needed to have that spelled out; he was one of the many, many people who helped kick George Soros’ Secretary of State Project in the teeth in 2010. The SoS Project is, of course, an ongoing campaign by Democrats to control the election process in individual states by controlling the Secretary of State position, which is usually the office that oversees elections: and Iowa was definitely on its radar in 2010. Losing that state hurt, particularly since Schultz both opposes Election Day voter registration and supports photo IDs for voting**: two policies that seem to infuriate Democrats all out of proportion to the importance that those people publicly ascribe to either. So it’s not surprising that some poor, misguided individual might have decided to target the Secretary of State in this fashion.".....

Captain Renault, pick up the white phone.

This used to be called “dirty tricks”, one of the things that got a bill of impeachment passed against Nixon.

You always come up with the most interesting articles, thanks for this one.

I had forgotten about the Secretary of State project. Is that what happened in New Hampshire?

I’m going to have to watch for this in WA State. The Republican SoS is resigning and I am sure that this will be a hotly contested race.

He looks like a typical Democrat operative, though he is missing the self-satisfied smile.

I have to think that some of these operatives are working on their own, without any real direction from the party officials. It’s difficult to believe that party officials would be that stupid and corrupt at the same time.

Nice photo. Love the orange jump suit. This is what happens when genes mutate to a lethal form. I suggest the electric chair but then I’m a guy who likes to inflict maximum pain and suffering on criminals.

This is the kind of behind-the-scenes stuff the Nazis were doing in Austria before the Anschluss.

That’s just so incredible, it looks like the corruption goes right to the top.

This is a statement from the LinkStrategy web site:

Strength: Our strength is a deep-rooted connection to state and federal government combined with a thorough knowledge of the issues confronting both Iowa businesses and members of the government.

Goal: LinkStrategies uses polling, research and, most importantly, creativity to develop a press plan and articulate a message that breaks through the clutter.

They certainly were creative, can’t deny that.

“This is BIG and it’s being ignored.”

File this under news you won’t EVER be seeing on NBC/MSNBC/CNN/ABC/CBS...

AND THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING

This is going to be the nastiest, most corrupt election of our lifetimes. I hope all of you are ready for it. We are going to have to FIGHT THIS, by getting involved. Sitting safely behind your keyboard sipping coffee is no longer an option.

It looks like this isn’t the first time that Jeff Links and LinkStrategy have been involved in an attempt at illegal election manipulation.

From a WA Post article on Jeff Links:

Link’s career has not been without some pitfalls. During Sen. Harkin’s 2002 campaign, Link was forced to resign as campaign manager after it was revealed that a junior campaign aide had secretly taped a strategy session for then-Rep. Greg Ganske, the GOP Senate nominee. No charges were brought in the case, and Harkin went on to a comfortable 10-point victory.

“The LINK Strategies web site says that Jeff Link “served as a media consultant to the Obama for President Campaign, coordinating branding, all paid media and polling in 25 states, including seven battleground states (VA, NC, FL, CO, NM, NV, MT)….”

Wow! Not some low-ranking volunteer, this was one of Obama's big players!

I just came across another tidbit, while researching this Office of New Media.

It seems that Obama has appointed another former associate of Mitt Romney to his administration. The new administrator of the Office of Management and Budget, worked at Baine Capital.
