Newt Gingrich Wins South Carolina Primary By Uniting Reagan Republicans By Van Hipp January 21, 2012
Newt Gingrich’s South Carolina State co-chairman John Napier knew the “Gingrich surge” was real last Sunday afternoon. Napier, a former U.S. Congressman and retired Federal Judge, pulled into the parking lot of the Land’s End Restaurant in Georgetown, S.C. for a Gingrich event expected to draw 25-30 people. Instead, over 350 people showed up before others had to be turned away. Napier said, “There were people there we hadn’t seen since Reagan ran.” Napier should now. He was swept into Congress from a rural district in SC in 1980 on the coattails of the Reagan Revolution.
Last Sunday afternoon’s event was then followed by Gingrich’s strong debate performances on Monday and Thursday night. Couple that with overflow crowds in rural areas of South Carolina such as Warrenville and Walterboro, and Gingrich’s “Big Mo” took on a life of its own that the national pundits didn’t see coming.
South Carolina is more representative of the GOP than Iowa and New Hampshire. It is comprised of economic, social and national security conservatives. All three came together to elect Ronald Reagan in 1980. Once again, all three need to be motivated and come together for the GOP to defeat President Obama.

According to CNN polling data, South Carolina Independents Voted 31% for Gingrich and 25% for Romney. This is 6-point margin compared to Newt’s 12-point margin of victory over Romney.
Moderates Vote 36% for Gingrich and 31% for Romney. This is a troubling statistic since although FL is a closed primary, there are more “moderates” in FL than in South Carolina.
In short, Newt has a lot of work to do with “independents” and “moderates” that are key demographics for beating Obama
These journolists are gettimg lazy with proofing their spell-checker results.
The checker should know that "now" is not "know", but it is only a spell checker.

Why is that a troubling statistic? Gingrich gets more independents than Romney, Paul, or Santorum. I was surprised by this fact initially, but then it started to make sense to me after I heard Newt say, “we’re not running a Republican campaign—we’re running an American campaign.” A truly powerful statement, because it transcends party, and is a message anyone who cares for this country can get behind.
His overall lead against Romney is cut in half among Independents. That’s a large 50% drop among Independents. FL is going to be a tight race for sure.
That's a ZOT-worthy statement. Why not try insulting more than two republicans in one sentence?
If I’m not mistaken, Florida, like South Carolina, is a closed (i.e., registered Republicans only) primary. As such, success with independents doesn’t matter much in Florida, and every other closed primary state.
I believe Independents do get to vote in closed primaries. Independents did vote in SC- (at least according to CNN poll data)
You are right, Florida is a closed primary state. (I just registered to vote in FL in November and was told in no uncertain terms that independents could not vote in Republican primaries.) That is as it should be.
How does one win over the independents and moderates? By putting forth a conservative agenda and selling it.
First of all, many of the "independents" are to the right of the Republican party. The moderates are sheep that needs to be led. They'll vote for a candidate if they think that's what everyone else is doing. A campaign proposing a solid, positive pro-growth, less government, low taxes agenda and we'll have it won.
