Yep. What a pant load of crap. The only thing Paul Farhi left out was “women and minorities hardest hit” and “people with iphones make too much money and should pay more taxes” and “nobody really needs to drive an SUV, we should all bicycle to work”. ;(

There are some of us who dislike humanity too much to reward it with our progeny...

They keep electing people like Jackson-Lee, Conyers, Durbin, Pelosi, Reid, and Obama, so they’re not going to get any more like me!

BTW, did anyone else see this week's Big Bang Theory? One of the guys gets a bit too attached to Siri. It was hilarious.

It was great. When I saw this thread, I figured I'd scroll down and see if any BBT fans had seen it. BBT is one of the funniest shows on TV right now, but it's not as kid friendly as it could be.

Siri digitizes your voice and uploads it to the servers. According to this article, it's a "compact digital form that preserves its information." I'll guess that it's phonemes, but I don't know that for sure.

That's going to require some bandwidth, but no more than if you were having a phone conversation for the same duration of time. If you are listening to internet radio on your phone, it's the equivalent of a few seconds.

Exactly. The reason iPhone 4S users typically use more bandwidth is not Siri, but the phone in general. It supports the fastest network standard available, and the people that buy the phone expect to be able to use that bandwidth! Bandwidth consumption is only going to grow.

This WaPo nattering nabob of negativism just needed to fill a news hole.

Siri DOES know the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow...

So what if I am old fashioned? Who ever said old fashioned = wrong? The Constitution is over 200 years old and the values it represents are just fine.

I was married at 18 and I’m a stay-at-home mom and what have I missed from the sexual revolution?

Random sex with guys I don’t really know. Living with some guy who won’t commit to marriage or who can’t afford to get married. Working at some shitty job that I hate for fifty years while sending my kids (the ones I don’t abort) to day care. Risking all sorts of diseases. Not marrying until the oh-so-magical age of thirty because...why? Because a bunch of lesbian feminists in New York and San Francisco say that’s what I should do? And why should I give a damn what some ugly, dried up and used up old hags from the 1960’s have to say anyway? Look at the mess they all made of their lives and then I’m supposed to do that, too?

No way.

My grandmother got married at 18 and had nine kids and she and my grandfather are still happy after over 60 years together. That’s what I want!

I might be old fashioned, but I won’t be 40 some day living alone in some apartment wondering where I went wrong in life.

Yeah, on that note, I’ve got a long time friend that I went to engineering school with 30+ years ago, who is very involved in backhaul engineering for AT&T Wireless. I should ask him about this. He’s likely to have a handle on what is creating their new bandwidth requirements beyond “more iPhones on the network.” I know he has been working hard for the last couple of years on movin’ mo’ bits.

Hey, kudos to you, seriously, and I agree with most if not all of what you said there. I was primarily making a grim comment about a sexual/demographic aspect of modern Chinese culture. And as flip as I perhaps sounded, I’m pretty deadly serious about the comment. They have 10s of millions of excess males in their society. Think about the ramifications of that for a few minutes.

Oh, it’s nice to be out of the mainstream. I haven’t had a ‘regular’ phone conversation in over 10 years.

I read once somwehere that some general in China seriously is proposing a war with India where millions of Chinese conscripts (not their best soldiers) would be sent against Indian troops with the intent of letting the Indians slaughter them. All to reduce that excess population of young men.

I hope that isn’t true but for some reason the cold logic seems to be a perfect fit both with China and with communism.
