Mitt Romney Leading Polls in Florida [Pollster: "I Think If Romney Wins This, It's Over For Newt"]

Mitt Romney Leading Polls in Florida Mitt Romney has pulled ahead of Newt Gingrich in Florida with a nine-point lead, according to a Quinnipiac University poll. 'I think if Romney wins this, it's over for Newt,' one pollster says.

Fearful GOP leaders pray Newt Gingrich can be stopped in Florida

By Paul West January 27 — After months of gyrating front-runners and inconclusive voter tests, a victory by Mitt Romney in the looming Florida primary would send the 2012 campaign down a well-worn path — pointing the most established GOP contender toward a highly competitive race against President Obama in the fall election.

If Newt Gingrich wins, the contours of the battle would be radically different: a prolonged intraparty struggle unlike any the GOP has seen in decades, pitting the former House speaker as an insurgent force against many present and former elected officials he once led, with unpredictable consequences in November if he is the nominee.

Romney has, for now at least, pulled ahead of Gingrich in the roller-coaster campaign for Florida. An opinion survey of Florida Republicans, released Friday by Quinnipiac University, showed Romney leading Gingrich by nine points, 38% to 29%. Rep. Ron Paul and former Sen. Rick Santorum were far back, at 14% and 12%, respectively.

"I think if Romney wins this, it's over for Newt," said John McLaughlin, a veteran Republican pollster who is unaffiliated in the presidential campaign. Looking ahead, Romney has the advantage in the Feb. 4 Nevada caucuses and other, largely symbolic contests next month, including a nonbinding Feb. 7 primary in Missouri, where Gingrich failed to qualify for the ballot.

I'm not sure if I agree with the pollster, but his statement reminds me of the movie "Gettysburg" when Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain speaks to a group of mutineers who refuse to fight, just before the big battle. After Chamberlain explains how special and how precious this land of freedom is, Chamberlain pauses and says, "Gentleman, if we lose this fight, I think we lose the war; so I'd be very much obliged if you would join us."

They do.

Just like the polls pointed to a Newt victory in SC last week, this time they are all pointing to a pretty easy Mitt victory in FL. All the recent polls are in the 7-9 point range. Of course, anything can happen in this wild roller coaster called the republican nomination. And a lot of early voting may skew poll results.

Newt was just on Greta, and he said that even if he loses in Florida it is not over. In fact he laughed when she asked him about it, basically saying this is just the beginning.

He’s not going away without a fight.

We really need a single nationwide primary. Having a few states decide the candidate sucks.

WHY should it be over?? Santorum will drop out soon, IMO and it will be down to Mitt and Newt. Newt will be the benefactor of Rick's voters and then, once again, it's GAME ON!!!! Newt just said on Greta that he isn't going anywhere if he loses Florida. Why should he? AND, I think the GOP E and Mittens have pissed him off just enough that he will stay in just to be a pain in Mitt's temple undies.

Romney will lose to Obama, because he fits right into the narrative of the so-called "progressives" and becomes their perfect opponent.

If these "GOP establishment" types, using the Left's tactics, force a Romney candidacy, then they must be held accountable for the consequences, including the loss of liberty for their posterity.

The Fall campaign will be a battle of ideas. Romney is no ideas warrior.

Obama understands the foundations of his ideology, and he understands how to frame those ideas in a manner that is misleading and appealing to those whom he wishes to enslave to government.

Romney shows no capacity for understanding nor articulating the ideas essential to liberty, and the way he frames what he does understand does not excite passion.

Oh, how we need a Jefferson or an Adams!

I saw the results of a Gallup? poll (If memory serves...) right here on FR early this A.M. stating that Newt had a 12 point lead on Willard. These polls are as scattered as shot from an old blunderbuss!

Newt leads nationally.

When Sanatorium drops, most of his votes will go with Newt — putting him well ahead.

Just for once I’d like to see the establishment “moderate” Republicans be forced to give in and unite behind a conservative candidate.

including a nonbinding Feb. 7 primary in Missouri, where Gingrich failed to qualify for the ballot.

WTH? Are you saying that Newt won’t be on the ballot in Missouri? I swear this could end up being a terrible campaign. How can he not get on these states? I hear there are like 5 states that he failed to make the ballot to a total of 500 delegates. How did he allow this to happen? Sheesh. We are in the most important election of our lives and a professional primary and our guy can’t even do the most basic requirement of running for President....get on 50 state ballots. So frustrating.

Good luck with that. Newt is not even on the ballot. Oh and Newt won’t win Nevada of all states. He won last time by 81 percent.

“Having a few states decide the candidate sucks.”

Especially when they are states like Florida; God’s waiting room; where the gullible old f@rts can’t wait until all the candidates have made their case, but rather just HAVE TO run out waaay early, and waste their vote by voting based on the mainslime media’s hype in favor of a Rino such as Willard.

Even if, say, it was over for Newt... do they think for one minute that it would then be “over” (ie., clear sailing) for Romney and the GOP?

They still haven’t figured us out.
