INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Rep. Dan Burton announced Tuesday morning his plans to retire after decades as a politician.
Burton, a Republican, has represented the 5th District in Congress since 1982. He served in the Indiana Senate before being elected to Congress.
On Tuesday, he stood on the Indiana House floor and said he was retiring for family reasons.
But in the past two elections, Burton has been the target of fellow Republicans.
More recently, Burton has been spotted in Florida campaigning for presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich.
U.S. Rep. Dan Burton came to the Indiana House of Representatives, where he began his political career in 1966, to announce he is retiring from Congress.
Burton said he had no concerns about the upcoming election, but that personal family concerns compelled him to retire.
Burton is facing four Republican opponents in the primary, and said there may be others who get in.
His former top aide, State Sen. Mike Delph, R-Carmel, was in the Indiana House this morning to see Burton announce his retirement. He has been widely expected to some day seek Burton’s 5th District seat, but could not be immediately asked for comment.
Burton, who has served 15 terms from a Republican stronghold, said he made the decision a few days ago in consultation with his wife.
Burton had been lagging in fundraising, according to an October campaign finance report.
Time for fresh blood...
LET’S KEEP IT REPUBLICAN.
Thirty years is too long...we need term limits.
This is an R+17 district currently (not sure what it is after redistricting).
The writing was on the wall. He bareley survived the Primary last time around.
Dan Burton 30%
Luke Messer 28%
John McGoff 19%
Mike Murphy 9%
Brose McVey 8%
Andy Lyons 4%
Ann Adcock 3%
Burton only carried a majority in one county (55%): Huntington
If term limits were a panacea, then California would have a professional and responsible legislature, instead of a revolving door for nameless and clueless lobbyists seeking only a job on the other side.
Burton was a good guy. You should read the Federalist Papers on the topic.
I agree! As a conservative I was for term limits. It seemed true to the original intent of the constitution and protected citizens of districts that were represented by less tenured politicians.
But the term limit experiment fail and you point out a great example where it had zero impact to fix a corrupt legislator! In fact, term limit could have made California political system more corrupt. The problem with California is that is has 85 state house members. The districts are so large that one can only get elected with the help a big rich special interests, which is ripe for the corrupt public employee unions. The solution is to increase the amount of legislators to bring representatives closer to the people.
See my tagline...
BTTT.
Dan’s my Congressmen. While he has been in DC for 30 years, he has been very conservative overall. I have not been ashamed of him. He’s a good guy.
His district is safely Republican, even with the recent unpacking of the Democrat gerrymander, so we should search for a young conservative to fill his very large shoes.
Personally, I’d like to see him as VP...sort of a Dick Cheney “mentor”-type.
Burton is a good guy. He stayed so long because he always voted the way his constituents wanted him to vote.
My son used to play with his kid. Nice people. His first wife died of cancer. She was a pretty lady.
