The Republican establishment is pulling out all the stops to try to keep Newt Gingrich from becoming the party’s nominee for president of the United States — and some are not letting the facts get in their way.
Among the claims going out through the mass media in Florida, on the eve of that state’s primary election, is that Newt Gingrich “resigned in disgrace” as speaker of the House of Representatives as a result of unethical conduct involving the diversion of tax-exempt money. Mitt Romney is calling on Gingrich to release “all of the records” from the congressional investigation. But the Wall Street Journal of January 28, 2012, reported that these records — 1,280 pages of them — are already publicly available online. Although Speaker Gingrich decided not to take on the task of fighting the charge from his political enemies in 1997, the Internal Revenue Service conducted its own investigation which, two years later, exonerated Gingrich from the charges. His resignation was not due to those charges and occurred much later.
Do the Romney camp and the Republican establishment not know this, a dozen years later? Or are they far less concerned with whether the charges will stand up than they are about smearing Gingrich on the eve of the Florida primaries?

Among the people who smeared Palin, the ones who were Repubs turned out to be Romniacs. And among the people who attacked and mocked the “tea party”, the ones who were Repubs turned out to be Romniacs again. So now they have turned their smear machine against Gingrich.
Now, I can see that being a rank and file Repub doesn’t automatically mean you will support Gingrich. If you are more of an old-line consertvative, you may go Santorum. If you’ve got a more libertarian bent, you might go Paul.
But under no circumstance could I support the smear-master. Back when Obama was jamming his trillion dollar 3000 page laws through congress, I kep waiting to see who would stand up. Romney never did. Palin did; Bachmann, DeMint, along with a few talking heads, and even Gingrich turned up to speak where ever he could find someone to listen. But Romney was AWOL.
During the tea party rebellion, I kept waiting for Romney to turn up and show his face and his support, and again he never did. He just had his proxies out there mocking them which I thought was bizarre at the time. Granted, the tea party folk weren’t real Romney supporters even then, but I promise during the dark days when Obama was running the table, had Romney shown up and given a barn-burner speech that took Obama to the woodshed, he’d have been given more than a polite hearing. He never did.
A guy who was AWOL during the political fight of the century has no right to any claim to leadership now. He and his proxies, who could only mock and smear the party rank and file when they were fighting for all they were worth, have no right to lead the very people they smeared and mocked.
If thats the party leadership, I’m in the wrong party, or they are.
I called the contact number from Newt.org today, spoke to a very nice fellow, and strongly encouraged Newt to focus on his economic plan, which is far superior to Mitten’s anemic one. I asked the fellow why Newt did not seem to be doing this, and he said he was not sure, but it might have something to do with the barrage of negative ads from Romney. I recommended that when Romney spews out the lie that Newt resigned in disgrace, Newt should simply direct Romney to the final report of the investigation, which exonerates him, and and then assert that at this time of economic crisis, it might be more important to actually compare the two economic plans. Romney barely changes anything, while Newt lowers the corporate rate to 12.5%, eliminates the capital gains tax, kills the obscene death tax, and creates an optional 15% flat income tax. Then leave it up to the public to decide which plan will explode the economy.

Astute observations all. Agree that Newt’s team should have him focusing on the fact that the final report exonerates him. That would take much of the air out of Mittens’ “resigned in disgrace” tires.

I keep hearing from the GOP-E and the MSM that the Tea Party is Dead, the Tea Party’s Influence is Waning, that we’re “not going to factor so much” in 2012, blah, blah, blah. I cry bs on that. We may not be assembling en masse in DC, but we’re all still out here paying attention and noting which elected officials adhere to conservative principles and which pay mere lip service. We’ll be at the polls in the primary and general elections; count on it!
The GOP has done a very good job of setting up a liberal for November. I’ll vote for the one who can only serve one term. I haven’t voted Dem since 1976 when I was 18 and voting for the first time. I’ll not vote Rep again until there is a conservative candidate
Pretty soon everybody will catch on that "There he goes again!" is an equivalent of Romney lies and people will start using it, chanting it spontaneously, on their own.
That can be used in debate with Romney (if any more will happen), in the TV/radio appearances and the rallies and will free Newt to talk about real issues, not Romney's platitudes about "Obama is bad."
This also has the advantage of portability into general election against Obama about his lies and statistics.

Just sent the idea to Newt.org with a small contributions. Told him if he made them I would buy....and a few extras for my friends at FR....Figured I’d get a plug in for the boss man.

Once Romney's lies are proven (in Alinsky's terms, "frozen"), they have to be dismissed and repeatedly mocked ("There he goes again" etc.) - that takes away the only weapon Mitt has (money used to spread the lies) and makes it a turn-off; it also frees up time from personal arguing to making a case for positive policy agenda of Newt's candidacy.

I’m absolutely disgusted with the way Mitt Romney is conducting his campaign. I’ve stated on this forum more than a few times that although my preference for the nominee is Newt Gingrich, I would vote for whoever the Republican candidate is. I find myself having to rethink that position.
