Well, I think that it is unbecoming of a Supreme Court Justice, retired or not (and remember that O’Connor still sits as a judge in circuit cases from time to time), to make jokes about presidential candidates, much less ones about their marital history or invoking religious steterotypes. Romney is a Mormon...a polygamist religion

Polygamy is one of the main tenets of Mormonism...

Ever time Romney intones his sanctimonious “I believe in the faith of my fathers” he is “sustaining” once again the polygamy that he family practiced for generations right down to his father George Romney...

His gg grandfathers had several wives as did his g greatfathers and his grandfather..

the Romneys fled into Mexico and settled there so that they wouldnt go to jail in the US for their criminal bigamy..

There was a large colony of polygamists or Mormons living in Mexico for decades..

They planned to stay there and not come back but a revolution caused many of the Mormons in the next generation to come to the US, George Romney among them..

As a temple Mormn and a high priest and a bishop, Romney has taught this same ritual of polygamy in the Mormon religious services..

as a temple Mormon Romney has to believe and “sustain” that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God and correct in all he claimed that the Mormon gods told him to teach...the main thing was the need for polygamy..

They practiced polygamy way into the 20th Century till about 1930

They didnt give up anything

In fact the first man they sent to congress from the new state of Utah was a polygamist and they knew it when they voted for him AFTER 1890..

But the decent people around the country objected to the sinful practice of polygamy..

I agree. It was pretty funny. I see nothing wrong with her doing that joke.

On the other hand, her record on the Supreme Court was a real joke. She was a mediocre, affirmative-action indecisive mealy-mouthed DISGRACE. I’ll try to think of some other things.

IMHO, O’Connor should have been impeached for her opinion in Casey v. Planned Parenthood, in which she, by her own admission, placed a determination made by a branch of government (the Judiciary, acting through the Supreme Court in Roe v. Wade in 1973) above her own understanding of the U.S. Constitution. Her idolatry of stare decisis ran afoul of one of the most basic principles of American hermeneutics, one famously expounded upon by Justice Marshall in the seminal case of Marbury v. Madison: that the U.S. Constitution is higher law, and trumps any decision by a branch of government.
