Newt Gingrich Is Right (NYT Ed on Fla)
NYT ^ | 12-3-12 | Rosenthal

Posted on 02/03/2012 11:37:06 AM PST by VinL

You did not misread the headline; and it’s not just a truism about Mr. Gingrich’s political orientation, I mean he’s correct—that Florida’s winner-take-all primary system isn’t fair.

According to Republican National Committee guidelines, all contests held prior to April 1 must allocate delegates proportionally. But Florida, not wishing to change procedures or fall behind other states, decided to flout the RNC rule, which means that Mitt Romney will get all 50 of its delegates. Mr. Gingrich—who came in second—will get none. Under a proportional system, Mr. Romney would receive 23 and Mr. Gingrich 16.

Not only that, NPR has calculated that Mr. Gingrich would currently be leading his rival 39 to 32 overall (New Hampshire plus South Carolina plus Florida), if delegates were allotted proportionally.

Mr. Gingrich’s campaign, which has surely done the same math as NPR, has complained to the Florida G.O.P., and consequently left me in a rather unfamiliar position. For perhaps the first time in my life, I completely agree with the former House speaker and future moon colonist.

Mr. Gingrich might have raised this issue before the Florida primary, when some polls suggested he could eke out enough of a plurality to benefit from the winner-take-all system. I doubt he would care about the RNC guidelines if he’d managed to win, and I doubt Florida’s delegates will be instrumental in determining whether Mr. Romney or Mr. Gingrich earns the G.O.P. nomination.

But the point is that a candidate in a two-person, winner-take-all primary could get 49.9 percent of the votes, and receive no delegates, and that’s not right. As our editorial board has said many times, both parties’ rules should be rewritten to guarantee that the number of delegates a candidate receives accurately reflects his percentage of the popular vote. To Limbaugh, Newt’s a peasant.

You have no idea what you are talking about. If you would bother listening to the show, Rush and Newt are close friends. He has been taking Mittens to task for being a fake Conservative as well.

Republican candidates attacking capitalism.

Republicans arguing that rules and laws should be changed after tha fact; that Winner-Take-All elections are bad.

What’s next for republicans?

- Arguing that the Electoral system should be abandoned?

- Claiming the other candidates aren’t qualified because they don’t believe in reparations, global warming and socialism?

This craziness is getting out of hand.

The primaries are over and Mitt won and even Rush Limbaugh believes we need to get behind the nominee and focus our energies on going after Obama.

Can you point out to me where Rush said that? As recently as this week he was calling for the Primaries to go on as long as possible to get the Conservative message out. If Mittens was his guy, would he be calling for it to end now? Does anyone bother listening to these radio programs before mindlessly attacking the hosts?

Well I hate to tell you this but I don’t give a damn what Limbaugh thinks. And TRUE conservatives follow rules and laws. You wanna cheat or ignore rules and law, become a Democrat. Romney is.

**************

And I guess that’s why he’s come out and endorsed the Reagan conservative Newt over the type of candidate Limbaugh has purported always disdained— you know, that Establishment McCain moderate he’s always talking about. /s

Yeh, Rush talks the talk—but like Ms. Coulter, he’s not walking the walk. Rush is ESTABLISHMENT!

And out of curiosity, does Rush have you guys monitoring the Board?-— because everytime there’s any criticism of him, the default answer is “if you listened to his program.”

Nice try. a) Rush is great but he is not god (Romney is:) and b) there is no nominee, they are all 1000 votes shy.

What kind of shill statement was that anyway?

Yeah you hear from people who listen when fabricated slams are made against him because it is obvious you are not listening to the show. Facts are generally posted here at FR and if they are not, corrections will be posted. If you have quotes of Rush endorsing Mittens, then post them now. Otherwise you are just making stuff up. The same goes for Beck and Levin who are promoting Santorum. Just because they are not endorsing Newt, doesn't make them RINO Romneybots. They are not comparable to DeMint and Coulter who are all out pushing for Mittens.

Like I said...who give a sh!t?

You nailed it. My eyes were clearly opened on Bloody Thursday. I have stopped listening to MittBot Rush since. I feel better. I can get all my important information from FR.

The NRC is looking more like the communists Democrats every day. Rules are rules and they have changes FL rules from the legal splitting the delegates. It is not a question of anything else except an effort to give Romney all the votes. Fair play has nothing to do with it. They have disenchanted the delegates that voted for Newt. That's a crime.

I wish had the money to put this on billboards all around the country, especially where he works.

anyone who truly loves this Republic would easily see that Mitt would be a total disaster. Yet, Rush would have NO problem with Mitt, you see, because Mitt has an R behind his name!

Rush NEVER truly goes out on a limb for Conservatism. It might hurt his sales for tea.

HUH, primaries are not over, the RNC are breaking their own rules for their RINO establishment guy and Romney should be beaten like hell over his Govt health care and liberal judges to homosexual agenda.

To say Rush said this and therefore we should all forget it does not mean we are all sheep.
We go by what we want and not follow one guy just because he states something

Do you have any links to where Newt admits to be close friends with Rush?

said a few days ago that the Romneybots will be waiting in the shadows to say we need to unite and get behind their man

Just because Rush says something does not mean we’re the borg or the Dems.
