Google says that it’s there because it’s a great place to promote their election-tracking site, push Google+ as a platform for sharing and collaborating, and because the conference is fairly young and tech-savvy.

Yeah, me too.

I forgot to mention, 'cause I think it goes without saying but... For completeness sake...

When online through your "clean" system like that never, ever access any online accounts (email, bank, blog, etc.) that can be traced to you, or that you have ever used from your "home" computer. Similarly, from your home computer never ever access your "private" accounts that you sign-on to from your "clean" system. You want to leave no linkage between the two online identities.

A lot of hassle — in principle it might be possible to tie different spots to different kinds of activities, but just forget once while you’re sitting at McDonald’s and it’s all blown.

I doubt even a second term Obama would attempt to actually shut down FR. It’s pretty darn mild when compared to sites like the DUmmies. (We don’t cuss or get potty mouth, much, and don’t smoke except in the back room.) He’d need the pretense, at least, to help avert getting impeached.

By the way, I wonder if somebody will come up with WiFi dongles with dynamically programmable MAC addresses. Or drivers that do the equivalent. That would probably be the most practically useful way of covering your tracks, it would be like coming from a completely new computer each time.

And don’t forget, never log into an identifiable account (email or other) in the same session as your questionable political activities. I know someone who was busted for a “prank” because he bracketed it with email sessions which enabled IT to figure out who was seated at the public access computer.
I wonder about freeping on a cell phone, personally. The nature of the internet is such that your computer must be identifiable in order to work.
Prepaid wireless cards (e.g. cricket), which get a new ip adress every time can help, no need to hunt for public, insecure, WiFi. Also, I noticed that it never returned an IP local to where it was used - so those annoying location based ads were way off. Speed can be slower, but you aren’t talking about gaming or downloading, anyhow.
If you are surrounded by like minded neighbors, perhaps consider a neighborhood network using local WiFi, even if the net were shut off, you could have local secure (reasonably) communication.

Bookmark for later - when I’m short on time and I don’t want to have to do a long search for that thread again later, I look for an interesting post and then post back with bfl, so when I get back on FR later on, it’s in the “new posts to you” section and I can quickly return to the appropriate thread.

After four years on here, I’m STILL learning as I go :-)))
