Rick Santorum could be headed for a big day in today's contests in Colorado, Minnesota, and Missouri. Missouri looks like a probable win for Santorum. He's at 45% there to 32% for Mitt Romney and 19% for Paul. Minnesota provides an opportunity for a win as well. Currently he has a small advantage with 33% to 24% for Romney, 22% for Newt Gingrich, and 20% for Ron Paul. And Santorum should get a second place finish in Colorado, where Romney appears to be the likely winner. The standings there are Romney at 37%, Santorum at 27%, Gingrich at 21%, and Paul at 13%.

Wrong! There will ALWAYS be negative attack ads in politics. Ask John Adams and Thomas Jefferson! Newt's problem has been the horrible way he's handled those attacks. He blew it. And if he can't take the mild incoming from Romney how in the hell do you think he's going to handle the nukes that obama and pelosi and the msm will drop on him in the fall?
The conservative vote is being split, just as planned.

Two candidates have little money. One has millions to use against them. He can't attack two at a time.
Have you ever watch any tag team wrestling....IMO we're seeing it played out during the primaries....More popcorn!?!? Newt will take the south, Santorum will the mid-west. They can cover more ground if they divide and meet on April 1.....Then full throttle attack till the convention.
Both need to keep their eye on the prize and both need to have the PACs take on Romney....OTOH have you seen any thing about Trisha Erickson's book CAN MITT ROMNEY SERVE TWO MASTERS? Her father served as Bishop at the same time as Mitt. She may take him down single handed if the MSM will gives her some time.
Rick and Newt also do a good job of Good-cop/Bad-cop and Let-you-and-him-fight.

That said, this race isn't over by a long shot.
Romney has run out of Mormon states for a while and Newt has an opportunity to recover.
But I agree that Newt must do battle against Romney despite Romney's dirty tactics. The Left will be dirtier than Romney by an order of magnitude.

I hope you’re right, pgkdan. The fact that a person of Huber’s experience thinks Santorum’s campaign has a chance is a big plus, I think.
The answer is simply that a lot of FReepers are so grass roots that they underestimate the challenges facing a political neophyte in big time politics. There are reasons that candidates who have not served in congress, the senate or in a gubernatorial office (other than perhaps Eisenhower)have never been viable in a presidential election. The inside knowledge of Washington or running a state are prerequisite to governing successfully. A neophyte, however well intentioned, capable and loaded with great ideas will come out of the gate with a number of huge stumbles in office, and unless such a candidate is amazingly fortunate in surrounding himself with advisors who both know the ins and outs of Washington and are utterly trustworthy, they'll be toast.
Yes, Perry was also fantastic.
