Bill: No sweets with food stamps (FL)

A Florida lawmaker is pushing a bill that would ban the use of food stamps to purchase snacks and sweets, such as cookies and cakes.

Republican State Sen. Ronda Storms, of Valrico, says her goal is to stop a small percentage of recipients who misuse food stamps.

Her bill would also require food stamp recipients to take state-run classes on healthy eating and how making your own baked goods is cheaper than store-made sweets.

The bill is moving through state committees in Tallahassee.

Critics say the government shouldn't be telling people what to eat.

Oh how they howl when their own ideas (food police) are turned against them.

When will they outlaw buying cooking wine with foodstamps? That’s what the bums do, b/c they can’t buy real alcohol.

They should be able to buy flour, salt, dried beans, powdered milk, rice, and fresh vegetables. Nothing else. Ideally, we would just terminate the program entirely, but if the program *must* continue, this would be a good set of parameters, IMHO.

Once you take government money they own you, they can control every aspect of your life.

Teaching the poor how to save money by baking cookies?

That’s the part I can’t get behind.

Its funny. Liberals claim when the government provides money to schools, they can dictate curricula. Or when they provide money to hospitals, they can mandate contraceptives and abortions. But the government can't tell food stamp recipients not to buy junk food, or welfare recipients can't be drug tested or forced to send their kids to school.

“a small percentage of recipients who misuse food stamps”

Small percentage? It’s the majority, based on what I see every time I go to the market.

Just yesterday I was in line at the gas station waiting to pay and the teen in front of me used his Food Stamp card to buy a Yoo-Hoo and a Slim Jim, then paid cash for a carton of marlboro menthols.

Don’t even get me started on the welfare queens at Wal-Mart...it’s disgusting.

To all of those on food stamps: This is what will happen one of these days.

The government will start dictating the types of food you can get with food stamps.

Give Obama another term, Moochelle will make this part of her “Let’s Move” campaign.

Oh yea right. It’s a small percentage. Here in PA they all buy sweets. I see them on line in front of me at all the stores. Trash young people that could get their asses to work.

They should be able to buy flour, salt, dried beans, powdered milk, rice, and fresh vegetables.

Which they would just turn around and sell in exchange for what they want to buy.

Cancel the food stamps, and let the current recipients have dinner at their school cafeteria. That's the trend, anyway, with kids getting breakfast as well as lunch, and talk about dinner.

If Food Stamps were cut down to just the staples the monetary amounts of the program could be cut down.....costs of enhanced foods, like junk food, ready-to-eat and the like - have huge extra costs built in. A 10lb. bag of rice is a lot cheaper than 10lbs. worth of packages of Rice-A-Roni.

Then-once you get off of Food Stamps - you can eat better - how about that!

It’s supposed to be a safety net not a wide net that covers the whole supermarket.

WIC has restrictions (there’s WIC signs all over the supermarkets)- why can’t Food Stamps?

They shouldn’t be able to “buy” anything. They should have to walk down to a central distribution center and get big bags of rice, beans, etc. and carry them home.

Alcohol with food stamps? You can buy vanilla extract. That’s 30 to 40% alcohol.
