There is no evidence that the Schmallenberg virus could cause illness in humans. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) performed a preliminary assessment on the zoonotic risks of the Schmallenberg virus which indicates that "it is unlikely that this new Orthobunyavirus can cause disease in human but it cannot be excluded at this stage". There’s something in the Jello causing outbreaks of Tourettes’ in school-age girls just west of here in LeRoy, NY.
DDT could have fixed this.
Insect bites????????????It’s friggin winter! Hundreds of people are dying all over Europe with the frigid weather. Do their skeeters wear long underwear and mittens?
Ping... (In case you missed this)
Ping... (In case you missed this) If this is a duplicate, sorry, I got a 502 error the first time.
This is not good. Famine is made out of aggressive diseases like this. It seems to be spreading across Europe pretty fast.
I usually get that same error when pinging my longer list; it means nothing actually! I just go hit the back button until I see the thread again, hit refresh, and voila - there’s the pinged out thingie.
Works like that every time. I thought it was because there are almost 350 names on it; but things do seem a bit slower lately here.
Might be insects that live on animals like fleas or lice or mites or something. But it seems to be spreading too fast for that. Sounds horrible.
Thanks for the ping!
According to the European Commission’s Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health, cases have been detected on 20 farms in Germany, 52 in the Netherlands, and 14 in Belgium. Many more suspected cases are being investigated. “A lot of lambs are stillborn or have serious malformations,” Wim van der Poel of the Dutch Central Veterinary Institute in Lelystad says. “This is a serious threat to animal health in Europe.”
“We are taking this very, very seriously,” adds Thomas Mettenleiter, head of the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institute (FLI), the German federal animal health lab located on the island of Riems. The virus appears to be transmitted by midges (Culicoides spp.), and infections likely occurred in summer and autumn of last year, but fetuses that were exposed to the virus in the womb are only now being born. The first cases of lambs with congenital malformations such as hydrancephalywhere parts of the brain are replaced by sacs filled with fluidand scoliosis (a curved spine) appeared before Christmas. “Now, in some herds 20% to 50% of lambs show such malformations,” Mettenleiter says. “And most of these animals are born dead.”
A host of questions remains unanswered. Which vector species is transmitting the disease? Can animals infect each other directly? And of course, where did the virus come from? “The problem with orthobunyaviruses is that their segmented genome makes the emergence of new combinations very easy, just like with influenza viruses,” Schmidt-Chanasit says. He points to a recent outbreak of a new orthobunyavirus in Peru. The pathogen, named Iquitos virus, turned out to have combined S and L segments of a known virus called Oropouche and the M segment of a new virus.
New Animal Virus Takes Northern Europe by Surprise

It was just reported that there are multiple fracking sites on the school grounds. More than just school girls are affected. Some male and female teachers too.
You’re Welcome, Alamo-Girl!
That brought home to me the idea that the concept of living off the land if things get rough, even where the people are spread thin, is a fragile plan.
(Of course, the tinfoil hatter in me mutters that this could be 'arranged' by a government or other group who wished to herd the humans to food distribution points or refugee camps. With little or no forage, few could endure/resist the crying of their own hungry children.)
Mom was the secretary to the Nat. Park Ser. and I know all the details. The Big Horn sheep were wiped out as they could not raise any young.

Thank you Doctor Potlatch!
