Sandusky: People have 'turned on me'
Philadelphia Inquirer ^ | February 10, 2012 | Jeremy Roebuck

BELLEFONTE – Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky lashed out Friday at former friends and neighbors whose complaints prompted prosecutors this week to seek his confinement inside his State College house.

Sandusky's remarks to reporters came moments after a court heard testimony that several people had expressed concern over his frequent presence on his back deck, yards from a neighboring elementary school.

"All of a sudden these people turn on me when they've been in my home with their kids, they've attended birthday parties here for my grandchildren, they've been on that deck and in that yard," he said. "It's been difficult to be honest."

But prosecutors argued that those same friends and neighbors had good reason to be worried.

"This home was not safe for children 15 years ago, and it's not safe for children now," said Deputy Attorney General Jonelle H. Eschbach.

Friday's court hearing addressed a hodgepodge of pre-trial issues as prosecutors and Sandusky's defense prepare to take the case to trial May 14. Common Pleas Court Judge John M. Cleland did not make any rulings from the bench.

I’m a firm believer if you read about this stuff in the newspaper and the internet, it doesn’t matter what the accused has to say- hang him! Forget about a trial. He’s guilty!!!! C’mon, the guy’s gonna say he’s innocent- they all do. The guy did it- I read it somewhere. Beat him ,stab him, sock him. To hell with justice. To hell with a trial! He’s guilty....because...um...I just know he is! This is what Free Republic stands for. Right?

This abomination of a life form (because he doesn't qualify as a human being in my book) deserves everything coming to him, but I have to make two predictions:

1.) Now that Joe Paterno is dead, Sandusky might well suggest to prosecutors that JoePa was a 'partner in perversion' and not only was aware of Sandusky's vile behavior, but participated as well. Everyone knows that would be a lie, but it would put prosecutors in the position of choosing to either cut some sort of deal more or less on Sandusky's terms (to prevent Paterno from being slandered in the grave), or letting Sandusky run his yap and destroy the reputation of Paterno (whatever is left of it).

2.) Failing the above scenario, depending on WHO Sandusky was supplying little boys to, he may not even make it to May 14th.

It wouldn't break my heart to hear that Sandusky woke up one morning with a tag on his toe, but if there are others (and we all suspect there are) I want to see justice done for EVERY perpetrator.

Sure, and when people realized that John Wayne Gacy was a sociopath who killed dozens of young boys and young men, they stopped inviting him to be a clown at their children's birthday parties too.

The truly frightening thing: You have no idea how ignorant you are. That terrifies me more than a thousand Sanduskys.

One thing that attorneys need in order to represent a client is “client control”. Sandusky’s attorneys have either no client control, or are totally incompetent.

I’ve been wondering if his outlandish/bizarre comments, interviews and behavior is just one big show orchestrated by his attorney. Trying to get some type of insanity defense or make Sandusky seem mentally unstable or incapable of a trial.

Anyone would be so horrified, so devastated, by such accusations that they would either hide out of public eye or try everything to clear their name. Certainly not whine and complain and make strange innuendo and creepy sounding commentary.

And I just have to wonder about his wife...

There aren't too many steps from "wealthy donors" to Mafia dons.

"Somebody" made the Centre County District Attorney disappear.

His attorney’s statement was as embarrassing as Sandusky’s. They were both awful.

I'm no expert on any of this, but I think it's possible that Sandusky is very publicly faking the "innocent victim" in order to spool up some potential doubt of guilt (among the easily persuaded); and the object might be to have some bargaining position for a plea deal.

So, all this might be an (poorly performed) act in order to try to wangle a reduced sentence. Corrections invited, if I'm missing something here.

Hopefully, the DA will stay strong.

True, as imperfect the process is at times, we must let the justice system work ad find the truth as best as it can. I guess the reason why I'm not over zealous as many are is because I've seen cases where there were false accusations made. One of them is my best friend of almost 40 years, we've been hanging since grade school. He had a girlfriend where she accused him of ab using her kids physically (not sexually, but still if you're accused of harming a kid, it seems like in many eyes, you are already guilty) and he was even arrested and spent a night in county lockup. His mother was on dialysis at the time was bent out of shape many ways from Sunday. I really thank God it did not get legs, the next day, his girlfriend's father told the truth that he did not abuse her kids and he was set free and all charges were dropped.

I might be a bit of a hard person here, because if there were any wrongdoings, they should have spoke up right away. Ten years later, it becomes a "he said, she said," story. I know if I felt I was harmed in anyway when I was a kid, the first person I would come crying to would be my mother. Assuming there were shenanigans, the time to stop and address them when they happened or very soon thereafter. It is like closing the door after the horse has gotten away. I know there is fear here but even so, despite that, I know my mother would protect me and go to the law right away.

Maybe Coach Paterno could have done more, maybe he put too much faith in the higher ups at Penn State. Perhaps he's of the generation where you don't go above the people right above you. I think Paterno got a bum rap, he did what he thought was right. I know his bosses should have done more but burden of starting any investigations really lays with the victims themselves to start the investigative process.

Perhaps you've missed Sandusky's interview with Bob Costas where he admitted that he showered with young boys, that he hugged them in the shower, that he touched their legs. Surely you can see that by his own admissions, Jerry Sandusky is at the very least guilty of molesting young boys.

The truly frightening thing: You have no idea how ignorant you are. That terrifies me more than a thousand Sanduskys.

When I see the rancor that many have where they just "wanna hang them high," I keep thinking of the old movie, "The Oxbow Incident" where three innocent men were hanged. I also think of one of my favorite TV show's, "The Fugitive," where Dr. Kimble was found guilty of murdering his wife but he was innocent. The latter generally made me opposed to the death penalty with the exception of very high treason in which it puts hundred, thousands and/or millions of Americans in danger or not worse.

We need to let the wheels of justice play out and see what happens.

Just out of curiosity, what happens if the court finds him innocent. Joe Paterno is still dead.

I’m wary about false accusations as well, however, when the man admitted that he showered with young boys, that he hugged them, and that he “horseplayed” with boys in the showers, I think reasonable people can decide that these accusations bear some merit. He has admitted to doing some of these things of which he stands accused! For those things alone, he needs to be in prison for many years!

There is no good, decent reason why a grown man should be showering with a young boy...period!

Why can’t people call a spade a spade when it is so apparently a spade?

Courts rarely find someone “innocent” (the Duke lacrosse players are an example). If the court finds Sandusky “not guilty”, then he likely will need to go into hiding much the same way that Casey Anthony is.

There seem to be plenty of that type around, even on FR.

He may walk if this goes to trial, though I can't figure out how he won't be guilty of some of the lesser charges. He has admitted to doing some of those things. I think some of those charges will stick, and that is why he's lamenting his current freedom with his dog and grandchildren. He's lucky that he was popular enough that the judge only gave him a $5000 per charge bail. You or I would never be that fortunate, and our little rear ends would be sitting in jail were we accused of the same things.
