Two months after successfully marshaling public support to extend a payroll tax cut for all Americans, President Obama today is attempting to do it again.
At the White House this morning, Obama will showcase supporters who were among the thousands that spoke out online and over social media in December to pressure Congress to compromise.
But the deal was only temporary. Taxes will rise on 160 million Americans at the end of the month unless lawmakers act again, and congressional negotiators remain at impasse.
Your voices changed the debate and reminded Washington what was at stake, Obama says in a video posted on the White House website. Well once again I need you. We all need you to speak out.
The administration hopes to spark a social media blitz, with average Americans concerned about their paychecks taking to Twitter using the #40dollars hashtag or posting their opinions on Facebook or the White House blog.
Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle say they believe the payroll tax holiday should and will be extended through the end of the year, saving a family making about $50,000 a year $40 per paycheck.
But whether they can agree on the fine print in the next 14 days remains unclear.
At issue is how to offset the cost of the tax cut and whether to extend unemployment insurance benefits and deal with the Medicare doc fix at the same time.
House Republican leadership Monday proposed as a last resort passing the payroll tax cut extension alone, through the end of the year, and dealing with the other issues separately.
But Democrats are reluctant to consider the items separately, believing that doing so would compromise passage of all the items.

I'm going to sign up for a Twitter account just to tweet something along the lines of, "End the insanity. Stop bankrupting Soc Sec for political gain. #40dollars"
Please post your tweet ideas below. Let's make sure they know where we stand.
When Obama gives a speech ,why does he have a bunch of dummies standing behind him ?
Political move in an election year.
What a manipulator.
Use the hash tag #Liar
This is stupid because the GOP has already said they would pass it without paying for it.
The US needs more tax payers (tax slaves) and reduced spending on indolence.
So, he is telling those that pay no income tax that they shouldn’t be paying payroll taxes either? Whatever happened to ‘fair share’ when half the country expects to pay nothing?
Every two months I wake up and it's...
GROUNDHOG DAY!!!
+1
This should be parodied just like #attackwatch.
#40dollars and a mule - the new Obama campaign slogan.
Dear Leader Baraq: it’s MY Social Security you’re shorting.
Make those b@stards pay - NOW !!
#40Dollars Can anyone in Washington DC use a calculator? We're broke and getting broker. Spread the misery.
Why not make it 40 acres and a mule, Obama? Enough with the gimmicks Mr Affirmative Action POTUS.
The Democrats have been using these television stage effects since at least the Clinton era. Usually it would be a diverse group (although Obama will often have a preponderance of pale-skins - to show that he's beloved by all...) of people nodding their heads up and down like bobble-head dolls. I guess they believe they can get people to subliminally buy their socialist messages if they see a bunch of people like themselves nodding their heads up and down when the politico spouts off...
It annoys the heck out of me.
...and with all the debt this is piling up, my Medicare premiums have been REDUCED by more than $10.00/mo.!!
Is there ANYONE driving this train?
If I used twitter or FB, I post that the $40 would be donated to any Republican candidate who defeats 0 bummer in Nov.
Perfect, thanks, Tweeted!
Rush already shot a hole in it today..Atalked about some #idiot who said...”the $40 will pay my internet bill so I can run my small busines.” The WH retweets it. Only problem is, the tax releif is a PAYROLL tax cut, no employees (i.e., self-employed), no tax saved. Must have come from an insider. What a #tool.
