New Jersey Governor Chris Christie announced Tuesday that he plans to order flags on public buildings to fly at half-staff on the day of Whitney Houston's funeral to honor the songstress and Jersey native.

"Whitney Houston was an important part of the cultural fabric of this state," Christie said during a press release Tuesday. Christie also said the pop legend belongs in the same category as Frank Sinatra, Count Basie and Bruce Springsteen.

He said he will sign the order later in the week after Houston's family makes a final decision regarding time and place of the funeral.

A Newark church pastor announced Tuesday that that a private funeral will be held for the popstar on Saturday at Newarl's New Hope Baptist Church, where Houston sang

Have you been reading Dale Carnegie’s “How to Win Friends and Influence People”?

I’m choosing to have a little reality disconnect and imagine it honors the patriots who lost their lives defending our country. The country that was.

What was he thinking?
Celebrating a drug addict, whose career was dead long before her own?

I don’t have a clue who Whitney Houston is, and wouldn’t have known her name except for FR.

Yes, and besides just singing that tune so beautifully, she also donated all the proceeds of that song to benefit the troops. When it was re-released after 9/11, she donated all her proceeds to the firefighters and victims’ families.

So, despite the fact that she was a drug addict and not a great example in her personal life, she just might have done more good in the world with a few acts like that than most of the people on this forum will ever accomplish. Just some food for thought...

Unacceptable flights of fantasy like yours are forbidden in the surreal world of today. /sarcasm just in case

“Yes, she was a great singer...but there are plenty of singers just as good as her, who are understudies on Broadway.”

Maybe strictly as technical singers, but not as performers. If they were as good performers as her, they would be as successful as she was. The proof is in the pudding.

I say that as a person who is not a big Whitney Houston fan, btw.

Success in entertainment usually boils down to being at the right place at the right time...if Clive Davis doesn't see her performing at that Church, you never would have heard of her.

Not true at all. In show business luck and 'who you know' are tremendous factors. Houston was 'discovered' by Clive Davis at Sweetwater's in NYC where she was a back-up singer for her own mother. That put her on the road.

If she were not family-connected she would not have been singing back-up for Cissy and would not have been 'discovered'.

It didn't hurt that her aunt was Dionne Warwick either.

Anybody who has spent time in either music or film can tell you tons of stories of remarkably talented people who never had the connections or got the break.

Creepy times two!

First creepy that Mister Christie, Governor State of New Jersey, uses his majestic authority to compel citizens throughout that great state to honor a druggie pop-merchant as if she were a hero who sacrificed all for others.

Second creepy that Mister Christie, Governor State of New Jersey, said (according to the report as written) that "the pop legend belongs in the same category as Frank Sinatra, Count Basie and Bruce Springsteen." Whitney, Frank, and the Count are all dead, Mister Christie! We wonder how the very alive Mister Springsteen feels about being that list.

Yes, I read it, but failed to grasp the nuance of not judging while advocating public condemnation...

I've seen more than my share of deaths from substance abuse. I'm not saying we should put her on a pedestal. I do believe that "condemnation" is not going to hit the target audience very hard because those who are prone to addiction are very likely to think "that won't happen to me". What does work is instilling the notion that "hey, I'm like that" and "yes that can happen to me".

>>>AFAIK, Governors don’t have any say in when the U.S. flag is flown at half-staff.

You know wrong. Governors CAN order flags - including the US Flag to half-staff.

Actually, I said “we” however the main point is we should not honor drug addicts when they die. I say this for the good of our children. Same thing happened with Michael Jackson, and he had the additional distinction of being an accused child molester.

Yes, this is sending teh wrong wrong wrong message to our kids. She should be acknowledged as agreat singing talent, but taht waht she did to herself is absolutely disgusting and shameful.

I’m really sorry if some here can’t see that. What’s not to see? Flags at half mast for a famous druggie who did herself in? Ridiculous.

Well, yeah I guess you can say there are thousands of people out there better than anyone you pick that just didn’t “get their break”, but then again anyone can toss out an anecdote. If someone was as good a performer as Whitney Houston, they’d get a break, unless they were just totally incompetent or uninterested in succeeding.

Did she get a “leg up”? Sure she did. But the music industry boosts people due to nepotism all the time, and most of them fall flat on their faces (well at least, they did before autotune). You couldn’t rack up as much success as she did, at that time, without delivering a product the public wanted to buy.
