From his appearance on the Tonight Show
Heh. That's pretty much the arguement on these leftist blogs... "OMG THIS TREVOR NOAH DOESN'T UTTERLY DESPISE EVERY POLITICIAN WITH AN "R" NEXT TO THEIR NAME AND WON'T PLEDGE TO TRASH FOX NEWS ON EVERY SHOW.... ROTTEN BASTARD IS A DISGRACE TO JON STEWART'S LEGACY!!!!"
I watched Noah's first Daily Show episode tonight (and my first Daily Show episode in 15 years!). It was okay. He had some really funny bits reacting to the Pope's speech and referring to Pope Francis as a "young Bernie Sanders" and one part where he imagined crack and meth fighting over which one of them kills people faster. It was also Roy Wood Jr.'s first episode on the Daily Show as a correspondent, and he had the funniest bit -- he started it by blurting out about he doesn't a crap about whether there's water on Mars during the science news segment. Noah's interview with Kevin Hart was bland and unremarkable, he needs to learn how to interview guests on a comedy show.
The leftists on the internet want Noah to trash Chris Christie when he's Wednesday's night's guest (because he has an "R" to his name, of course). They will likely be disappointed.
The show's format was very much "Jon Stewart lite" in its first episode, but it was the same way when Jon Stewart took over in 1999 and the first episode was "Craig Kilborn lite" and nothing like the know-it-all, in-your-face, smug liberal mouthpiece that we associate with Stewart's Daily Show today. Trevor Noah also played the whole show wayyyy too "safe" and "predictable". The 90's Daily Show was much more spontaneous and zany.
I'm guessing it will change over time as Noah finds his groove and incorporates his own segments and team. It's a learning curve for him and the show is in a transitional state now.
At least I can watch The Daily Show for more than five minutes now.
Good analysis. I liked his opening (Pope sexting and making fun of Mr. Tears) and the segment on Mars.
The bit with the congressional corespondent and the interview with Hart, no. He showed his greenness as a host there.
An aside, I’m sure glad Francis didn’t come here. Those crowds.
