The first Rasmussen Reports survey of the U.S. Senate race in New Mexico shows a tight contest between former Republican Congresswoman Heather Wilson and her two likeliest Democratic challengers.
The statewide telephone survey of Likely Voters in the state finds Democratic Congressman Martin Heinrich picking up 45% of the vote against Wilson, who draws 43% support. Five percent (5%) prefer some other candidate in the race, while seven percent (7%) are undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.)
If State Auditor Hector Balderas is the Democratic candidate, he and Wilson are tied at 44% each. Three percent (3%) prefer another candidate, and nine percent (9%) are undecided.

Heather Wilson is polling better than I thought she would. A win here would be a key pickup, given that the state leans towards the ‘Rats. The state tends to reelect incumbents.
Open Seat, I’d say its a toss up.
Rep. Wilson has a very healthy resume, is immensely qualified and could use our support.
We need this seat! Thx for the heads up CF!
I’m guessing those other candidates are Libertarian or some maybe a fake Tea Party or something. They’ll likely tilt the race to the Dem.
Rasmussen polled me for this and other questions last night. Also asked me what I thought of BO - don’t see that result on the Rasmussen web site though.
One thing in Wilson’s favor is that she has Gov. Martinez’s support as well as Pete Domenici’s political apparatus behind her.

This is a marked improvement from the last poll I saw from this race.
One opponent, Lt. Gov. John Sanchez, dropped out last week.
She still has one other opponent: Greg Sowards who no one has heard of. BTW, his campaign manager is Gary Johnson who bolted the Republican party to run for president as a libertarian.

Hmm, I don’t think that Sowards’ campaign manger “Gary H. Johnson, Jr” is the same person as former Governor and current Libertarian candidate Gary Earl Johnson (nor could it be a son, his only son is named Eric).
Sowards sounds irrelevant.
It’s helpful that Sanchez quit, I favored him over Wilson but it appeared she was gonna beat him in the primary, better to save the money and effort for the democrat.
Thanks for the clarification - so much for “just assumed”!
Yeah I was sorry that Sanchez dropped out. I know I’m in the minority, but I have not been a Heather fan for the last 6 -7 years or so, although I used to send her money pretty regularly before that.
