Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu — who became the face of Arizona border security nationally after he started stridently opposing illegal immigration — threatened his Mexican ex-lover with deportation when the man refused to promise never to disclose their years-long relationship, the former boyfriend and his lawyer tell New Times.

Babeu is running for Congress in the new District 4. My friend, Senator Ron Gould is running as well. I think his chances just got a whole lot better. I do not know how the Sheriff is going to get out of this... What do you think?

His homosexuality has been a very poorly kept secret. Frankly, I didn’t care because up til now, it hasn’t been an issue.. Well.. That seems to be over. I just do not understand how he thought this wouldn’t come out.

Smells like a smear job.It sure does. There is nothing in those e-mails that they quoted that even remotely insinuates a threat to deport him. I'll reserve judgment until more comes out.

Well, if it ain’t our sweet Babeu. And he seemed so sensible. It probably matters little to his political capability whether he had whoopee with goats (as long as the goats, hypothetically, consented). But if the allegations are true, this is just plain improper. It would not matter if the affair was homo or hetero or just a beer buddy.
