It's an inevitable question as Jan. 31 rolls into Feb. 1: Do Americans still need to celebrate Black History Month? For a black person, questioning the tradition's existence may sometimes be considered akin to turning in your black card, jokes filmmaker Shukree Hassan Tilghman in his new documentary, More Than a Month.
The film follows Tilghman, now 32, as he takes a yearlong cross-country trip in February 2010 on a one-man mission to end Black History Month, a concept that he finds puts black history in a 28- (or 29-) day box. Through personal reflection, research and interviews (from his forlorn parents, who are none too happy to hear about his plans, to Sons of the Confederate Veterans, who want to establish a Confederate History Month), Tilghman explores issues of race identity and how history is taught in this country.
More Than a Month tackles a question larger than why Black History Month exists; Tilghman wonders what it means that it still exists -- and what it would mean if it didn't. The Root spoke with Tilghman about his own experience with Black History Month and why he wants to end it.

I would end ALL the minority history months, as well as all the special one-day “commemorations” that the gaysbians are always adding every year!!!!
Teach true American history and blacks might not feel the need to have a special month. After all, there are plenty of black revolutionary era patriots and heroes that can and should be celebrated along with the rest.
wutterwegonneeDOOOOOO!!!!!!!
I had the pleasure of listening to both Anita Moncrief & the Reverend Wayne Perryman last night. Rev. Perryman went into a lot of detail about Abraham Lincoln’s life that we never get in history books because the leftists want to paint America as a totally racist nation & tar our heroes with that brush. It was a wonderfully informative evening. Too bad most will never understand what is happening to our country!
Sounds interesting..what were the details about Lincoln that most peeps don’t know about?
"The Man gives us February because it's the SHORTEST month of the year!"
He said that Lincoln has been tarred as a racist because of comments he made in the debates with Stephens(?). But in his neighborhood he had many black neighbors & one of his best friends was a wealthy black businessman. This man visited with him in the White House.
His wife also had a very close relationship with a black woman and they would go shopping together. When the Lincoln’s son Willie died, his wife was distraught & the only person she would allow to come to her was this black friend. This lady prepared Willie for burial. On the night Lincoln was assassinated this woman attempted to come to her, knowing she would be in need, but soldiers posted outside of the White House refused to let her enter.
Also, IIRC, Lincoln had left instructions that his black friend should lead the horse pulling his caison, but he was too distraught over the death to do it.
Unfortunately, the details are getting hazy. Old age... But that’s probably the gist of it.
Thanks! I actually did not know that...that’s why I love FR. The things I learn about American history.
Washington’s slave, William Lee appears to have been the only true friend and confidant that George Washington had. Lee was trusted with the deepest military secrets General Washington had.
Add to that Washington’s will stated that none of the slaves were to be sold. Instead they were deeded land in southeast Pennsylvania. Prime land. Thanks to Washington those freed slaves became wealthy landholders.
Color me suspicious
This outstanding magic negro and all like him have been given quite enough they do not deserve a month of anything!
It is time to stop pampering blacks and let them join the mainstream.
The latest 3 ring circus over Whitney Houston’s death was just another display of the excesses resulting from our twisted, perverted culture that has a seperate set of rules for blacks and pretty much makes them unaccountable and untouchable.
Blacks need to break away from their obsession with skin color and start thinking of themselves as non-hyphenated Americans.
They have had their day - it’s time to get off out backs and
They have had their day - It is time for them to stop forcing their victimhood into every aspect of our lives and concentrate on building a better life for themselves and their children.
The need to get off the government plantation and off taxpayers backs.
Wayne Perryman has written a couple of VERY interesting books....I’ve read the first one below, but not the second....

Exactly.
