The measure has the backing of the Senate's top two leaders -- President Pro Tem Tommie Williams, R-Lyons, and Senate Majority Leader Chip Rogers, R-Woodstock -- who have signed on as co-sponsors.
"The federal government has excessively abused the authority of state and local governments for some time," Albers said, explaining why he sponsored the proposal.
SR 889 has been assigned to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

A panel of Georgia lawmakers would have the power to review federal law and declare it illegal under a proposal in the state Senate.
Senate Resolution 889 would create a “joint commission on recommendation” to advise on which federal laws infringed on the state. If approved by two-thirds of the General Assembly, Georgia residents would be exempted from following them.
Sponsored by state Sen. John Albers, R-Roswell, the proposal would also force lawmakers to “adopt and enact any and all measures that may become necessary to prevent the wrongful enforcement of any federal laws or regulations duly nullified within the boundaries and limits of this state.”
Like the collecting of the Federal income tax, and when the states don't comply, the Feds withhold funds. What recourse does the State have?
I really hope more states start adopting this attitude.
I seem to recall Georgia went down this road before. Newt even wrote some books on it. It ended poorly, IIRC. Something to do with Sherman. At best this is poor timing for it. They can always reconsider if Obama is re-elected.
It’s high time that States recognize their rights when in conflict with the Federal Government. The Federal Government should NOT have the right to bribe States with do this or lose monies, nor should they continue to have to fight over 10th amendment issues.

The biggest step needed is to repeal the 17th amendment; it would have appalled the framers. Things weren’t working perfectly before Wilson’s amendments; adjustments beyond restoring status quo ante may be indicated but should be VERY carefully thought out. But certainly the framers intended to divide governmental power as much as they could, with the states intended to be independent of the feds in many ways and the senate being their instrument at the federal level. Alas proper states rights got entangled in the original sin of slavery and may not be restorable until we can wean the slaves’... and masters’... descendants from the liberal plantation.
Well, you might be right but remember today’s politics. It may not longer matter who whether the legislature or the people vote - the legislature is corrupt and the people are led by the media.
While I agree that it might make some difference, only politically. The actual Representation of the folks would change little.

One of my few regrets, is that I was born 150 years or so to late to shoot that SOB.
When Georgia — and the South — went down “this road” before, most of the productive population and industry was in the North.
The North is now moribund thanks to the domination of the statists up there. The manufacturing and food production is now mostly located in the South and Midwest.
THOSE are the facts that matter if God forbid we end up going down that road again. Not the names of the states...
I have always thought that the federal income tax should be collected by the states and then passed to the federal government as deemed appropriate by the State Legislature. If a state is getting short changed they can withhold the funds at the state level.
I guess this means I have to go back to Atlanta...

It probably has a good chance to pass as the GOP holds almost a supermajority in both state houses.
Thank God the republicans in the state house bear little or no resemblance to the 2 RINO senators and a lot of the US reps from GA.
If Obama wins reelection, then I believe you will see a lot of this legislation through out the Republic. Things could get a little dicey.
That was a different time. The majority of the people are now in the South. This is based on the old Mason Dixon line and the former Confederate States of America.
However, I have feeling that Maryland would probably be on the North Side this time around.
