11 children removed from sex offender’s home after some were found tied to beds

One month later, authorities are still trying to find out how the children were there

Child Protective Services removed 11 children from this home in Dayton, Texas last month.

DAYTON, Texas — Texas authorities said Tuesday they removed 11 children from a crowded home where a registered sex offender lives after they found eight confined in a small, dark bedroom with restraints tying some to their beds.

Along with the children, 10 adults were living in the one-story, 1,700-square-foot home in Dayton, about 30 miles northeast of Houston, Child Protective Services spokeswoman Gwen Carter said. One month after a raid on the house, authorities are still trying to determine how the children are related and why they were there, she said.

The children ranged in age from 5 months to 11 years. Three who were age 5 or older had not been enrolled in school, Carter said.

The children were removed after authorities found two 2-year-old children tied to a bed during a January visit to the home, according to a court document.

A legally blind, 5-year-old girl "was in a restraint on a filthy mattress, and appeared to be in a daze," the document said. One child had a black eye and knocked-out tooth.

The adults told investigators they tied the children when they slept or took a nap during the day "for safety," the document said. An investigator noted that none of the adults said they saw anything wrong with the arrangement.

Two of the children had what authorities feared was pneumonia and were taken to a children's hospital. All have since been placed in foster homes, Carter said.

The case is still under investigation, and Dayton Police Sgt. Doug O'Quinn said officials are looking into criminal charges. Liberty County District Attorney Mike Little said his office would present a case to a grand jury next month, but he declined to discuss possible suspects or charges.

"Our primary concern was to make sure that the children were stable and safe," Carter said.

The home with a "No Trespassing" sign out front is in a subdivision near land used for farming and ranching. A tricycle and other toys were in the backyard Tuesday, and several cars were parked outside.

People leaving the home declined to talk to media assembled outside, and other residents and their relatives declined to comment or didn't respond to phone messages.

One person in Texas' online sex offender registry listed the house as his address. Mark E. Marsh III was convicted in Michigan 15 years ago of criminal sexual conduct with a 15-year-old girl. He did not have a working phone number listed.

Neighbor Wayne Hardin said he never saw the youngest children and had no idea so many people were living in the house. Though he often saw eight or more cars parked outside, Hardin said he was told the residents had a big family.

"I was shocked," said Hardin, who had called police about loud music blaring from the house. "We didn't have a clue."

Along with the children, two teenage runaways with a stolen car were at the home, authorities said. The boys, both 16, admitted running away from foster homes, smoking marijuana and driving a car they knew was stolen, authorities said.

Carter said the home was not registered as a foster home or day care.

I agree. So sad that those of us who have fought so hard for decency in America, will have to leave it to our future the shape it is now, and there is nothing we can do about it.

People (parents included) just love HOLLYWOOD and idolize RAP music too much to give it up. Let's face it, there are just BAD PARENTS to have raised such as this. Nothing is sacred any longer.

Oh, BTW did you know that the American Idol/Icon Whitney Houston died, committed suicide? Yes, she did.

Guess we are just old. (i am), and can't wait to get out of this mess, too disgusting to look at or listen to any more. In the meantime I will rant and pray.

What makes you think we have an omnipotent God? I believe God omnipresent. As you know you cannot force someone to love you.

God's law (aka Universal laws) are the rules to life IMHO. The 10 Commandments I believe was God's way simplify some Universal laws to everyone. That way there is no misunderstanding.

For instance, the law of attraction is we get back in life what we put out (aka Karma). That's why Jesus said forgive your enemies. It was not about kumbaya! It was to protect us from having what we put out boomerang right back to us. The only way to stop karma is through forgiveness. Forgiveness is more for you than for them.

There are other God laws like the law of Supply. This is why Capitalism beats out Communism every time. Communism goes against Universal law of Supply. Another law is the law gravity. I don't care how many times you step off the Empire State Building... you are going to fall! That is universal law. If you understand the law (rules to life), then life will begin to change for you. We manifest what we think about most. So if you want to change it think about what you want instead of what you do not want.

Science explains the how and Religion tells us why.

Yes I am old too. LOL

I know she dies, I couldn’t escape it, it was everywhere. You would think it was the second coming or something. They glorify an addict and spit on the Lord.

I heard excerpts from the spectacle and I understand Costner (?) said “armies of angels came to take her to Heaven”. I ranted and raved at that. I’m sorry sue died, but I’m sorrier she didn’t have the brains to know that crack is addictive. She made the wrong choice. Hollywood mentality.

Instead of being truthful about an unrepentant drug addict that desperately needed help they are making it look as if it’s okay to die from an overdose or just commit suicide.

That is todays mentality. I am old school so I knew modesty and morality. Today, those words are a punchline. Sad.

Sounds like a typical pedophile hell hole.

Convicted pedophiles should be executed.

However, the home may not be typical.

According the article in the NY Daily News, yes. According to other sources such as Post #5, in my opinion, the situation may not be so cut and dry.

-=] * IF * [=- the story is the same as the one in the video at KHOU in Texas in post #5 then there may be some mitigating circumstances that differ from some of the points made in the New York Daily News article. However, in my opinion, convicted and registered sex offenders, should always be treated as harshly as the law allows.

Those women are allowed to leave the home with smiles on their faces? They were just over for tea and had no idea little children were tied up in the bedroom?

Either a cult or a foster care mill.

The comment on Whitney Houston was sarcasm, sorry I did not put the /s at the end.

I did not watch a second of that display of hypocrisy called a funeral.

Costner said WHAT? what does he know about anything truly heavenly? Hypocrite. He's hollyweird and PART OF THE PROBLEM himself, that glorifies the behavior of Crackheads and sleaze.

Sorry she died, well nothing to me, we are all terminal. It's just that she glorified her abusive life style and people still bought her product/cds and supported her.

Yet, we are the ones that are LAUGHED AT for being prudish and old fashioned??? rofl. I am still alive and doing well, joke on them. Nothing like clean living, NOTHING can beat it.

Yes, Costner said it and I about choked with anger.

We are not really oldfashioned. We just know there are many roads to hell and one narrow one to Heaven. We are on the narrow one and doing great. He who laughs last laughs best. :)

Now, I ask anyone: The pregnant one.....why do they wear that type of clothing, it is gross. I do not want to see that big belly showing ANYTIME, EVER, it is disgusting. They seem so proud of being knocked up.

Oh my gosh. An institute of pedophilia and child abuse masquerading as a normal house is discovered, and you take offense at a normal pregnant look? If you are elderly enough to be shocked when I Love Lucy first showed a pregnant woman at all, I’m sorry. But today’s normal pregnant married woman is proud of her bump and does indeed dress like this when casual. It is no longer embarrassing to be pregnant.

I am not calling this particular woman normal. But normal pregnant women could easily be wearing a t shirt and jeans like that.

So, do you routinely ask people wearing shirts and dresses with an empire waist if they are pregnant? How rude of you!

I’m not defending THIS woman in particular, but why in the world would someone who obviously DOES value children say that this woman’s “big belly” is “gross” and “disgusting”...

Also, if you actually read the article it says that these women are the daughters of the Grandmother who own the home, and that they are MARRIED - not “knocked up” as you allege. Being married, according to “Christian Values” they have every right to be proud of being BLESSED with a gift from God in the form of a child. And, I dare say, even those who get “knocked up” as you so eloquently state, have every right to be proud of the BLESSING they have received as well.

The notion that a “big belly” and a growing human is “disgusting” probably leads more girls who are super-self-conscious to abortion (abortion activists are always talking about the baby as a “parasitic” organism, your attitude towards a natural, and beautiful process created BY GOD doesn’t help) - especially considering they have to deal with people like you judging them based upon no actual knowledge of their situation.

Yes (if you couldn’t tell by MY attitude I do take your comments personally), it was people like you who gave me dirty looks when I was pregnant and had my children - even though I had graduated High School, had a 5.0 GPA IN College, was married (to the father of ALL our children), and in my 20s. The “problem” was that both my husband and I appeared much younger than we really were and we saw with our own eyes the harsh judgmental stares that probably face every young couple who try to do the “right thing” (we’ve been together almost 22 years now and have four beautiful daughters). ESPECIALLY the harsh looks from the mothers of my childrens’ peers.

I’m not defending this family - I don’t know anything about them other than the article I read. However, you may want to re-examine your attitude. Maybe you are one of the ones the Lord is waiting for to come to their senses...

Remember, pride goeth before the fall... Or, have you forgotten. I don’t think ANY of us - all the sinners we are - have ANY right to believe we have lived a perfect life, or are better than others. This is the attitude you are displaying - it’s hardly a Christian value that you are putting forth into the world. The fruit of your comments on this thread have been harmful to others, and yet you are gloating of your holiness, and that you have supposedly been lucky enough to find the “narrow path”, and in your opinion not one of these people whose style isn’t suited to your taste is going to hell? That log in your eye must be quite large to not see that you are just as much a sinner as the rest of us - if not more because the rest of us admit our mistakes when you seem to believe you’ve made none, and your judgement is as pure as God’s.

I did not distract from this horrible story in one bit.

They posted that disgusting picture of the preggie, and my comments were to that.

The NEW pregnant style in clothes is DISGUSTING. Same as looking a some fat slob with their belly hanging out. COVER UP, we all know what go into you. The WET Tshirt look is horrible.

Pregnancy is wedlock is wonderful, out of wedlock disgusting. Sorry if that offends you, it's MY OPINION and I state it here in FR. OK?

It's the time you live in and you must understand it, I don't and I will speak my mind when I feel the need, rude and funny. I'm old enough to be able to do that. ROFL,HAHAHAHAHAHA.

Pregnant, they wear the WET TSHIRT look. Why? we all know what got into her. Funny how women want to be slim and trim and do everything they can to get that look, yet they relish the BULGE of pregnancy. What happened to modesty????

NotPregnant: They wear maternity clothing, go figure.

Having a child molester tie kids to beds is OK, but smoking while pregnant is just plain wrong.

Did I really need an </irony> tag?
