Dutch prince 'unlikely to regain consciousness' after skiing accident
UK Telegraph ^ | 2/24/2012 | Unattributed

Doctor Wolfgang Koller said on Friday that it took nearly 50 minutes to reanimate the prince, who is the second son of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands.

MRI scans have showed his brain suffered "massive damage" in the avalanche in Lech on Feb. 17 in which he was buried for at last 15 minutes.

"It is clear that the oxygen starvation has caused massive brain damage to the patient," he said. "At the moment, it cannot be predicted if he will ever regain consciousness."

Prince Friso, 43, who is married and has two young daughters, will be moved at a later date to a private clinic for further treatment but it may take years before he awakens, if ever.

This is a terrible tragedy for the Prince and his family.

I cannot help but wonder if he will become the focus of the euthanasia debate in the Netherlands. The Dutch royal family is very wealthy, and can afford the best possible care for him indefinitely.

Yes, interesting that this should happen to a member of the Dutch royals, of all countries. It would be expected of a commoner that the plug gets pulled. We'll see.

Read the article and it seems his wife had ties to the Dutch underworld.

Wouldn't surprise me if this was not an accident.

The prognosis for Ischemic brain injuries like this is poor. The only ray of hope may be that his head was kept cold. Freezing is often used as a treatment option for these kind of brain injuries. It makes the chance of recovery a bit higher.

Last year, my one-year old grandson went into cardiac arrest and was without oxygen for over 20 minutes. As a result, he is in a permanent vegetative state. He is still in the hospital. He will be two this April.

Anyhow, hope the Prince is able to have a meaningful recovery.

A friend and co-worker was killed in a skiing accident this past Sunday. Fell and hit his head the base of a lift tower. And he was a professional ski instructor.

Hey, it happens in the movies!

Were it my loved one, I’d get in touch with Curry Blake or his trainees . . .

But in the movie version, the prince would ski faster than the avalanche while shooting over his shoulder at the mobsters chasing him. Then he’d ski off a huge cliff, pulling the ripcord on a parachute that would open to a giant Dutch flag. Then he’d make some wisecrack that wouldn’t really translate in the subtitles.

And, in the real-life version, he is a royal dutch shell.

Don’t encourage me.

The drug lord she knew died back in 1991. The prince lost his rights to the throne when he married her back in 2004. Seems a tad unlikely.

Please explain how a crime syndicate can use an avalanche as an assassination weapon.

maybe an artillery piece with a silencer..

heck, a crime syndicate took out JFK in broad daylight.. and they do tend to have long memories.. *-)

He was no novice.. the danger level was high too tho .. sad.

Why should you apologize? You said something many of us were thinking.

Never apologize for saying the truth. For many of us, PC is a bunch of crap.

Thanks for the kind words. Didn’t mean to hijack the thread and make it about me, but the story did hit close to home.

I posted a vanity about our misfortune last year and was overwhelmed with the amount of love and prayers that we received from FReepers.

Best.
