San Antonio Spends $7500 per Electric Car on Recharge Stations

From the Express News...

Power stations wait for traffic

Colin McDonal, San Antonio Express-News
Updated 02:25 a.m., Tuesday, February 21, 2012

A reader wants to know why the city has installed 120 recharge stations, such as this one, for electric cars when there are only about 80 electric cars in use in San Antonio. Photo: Helen L. Montoya, San Antonio Express-News / ©SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS

San Antonio now has more than 120 public electric car charging stations spread across the city, putting it on par with places like Austin, Seattle and San Francisco in welcoming the new vehicles.

CPS Energy installed the stations and is celebrating them today at the Santikos Embassy 14 movie theater on the North Side with local electric car owners — a number that CPS estimates is now 80.

~snip~

The U.S. Energy Department paid for the stations, valued at $5,000 each, as part of a three-year study about how to make electric cars more acceptable.

more....

Then yesterday - a letter to the editor

‘What a bargain!'

Re: “Power stations wait for traffic” (Page 1, Feb. 21):

The city has installed 120 recharge locations for the estimated 80 electric cars in San Antonio. And we wonder where the stimulus money (read: our tax money) went.

The Express-News story said, “The U.S. Energy Department paid for the stations, valued at $5,000 each...” Regardless of who paid for it, if it was a government entity then it was our tax money. That's $600,000 — $7,500 per local electric car. What a bargain!

FWIW, I am not George W. Hollis. But I will say he is spot on.

Here in Manassas Virginia we also got the “free” charging stations but it cost the city $15,000 for installaion.

We vave ONE Chevy Volt.

“Electric Charging Stations – 5 were deployed in the City of Manassas – Provided free to the City @ $5,000 a piece, $25,000 total

Installation costs have run in total $15,000”

Its said they’re doing the same thing in the city I live in; I’ve only seen one Nissan Leaf. I’d be afraid to own one for fear someone would be angry and attack me. People here can be seen shaking fists and shooting the bird at Prius owners.

Question - is the electricity provided free of charge by these charging stations? Or does the car owner have to pay for it? If the electricity is free, that is even more cost to the taxpayers.

Recharging stations are just another example of Obama screwing over the tax-payers.

After we get done paying for a $7500 (soon to be $10,000) tax credit for others to buy a Volt, we then have to absorb the $250,000 cost that Govt. Motors passes on to us taxpayers to build a single Volt.

And now we have to pay for these idiots to recharge the damn thing?

Who pays for the electricity for charging these monstrosities? I say if you have the money to buy one of the glorified golf carts AND get $7500 from the government for doing so, you ought to be paying at least for the electricity you are using to charge them if not a portion of the cost of the charger as well. The rest of us when we pull into a gas station have to pay for our $5/gallon Obama gas and aren’t getting any free ride.

FTA

For $2, anyone with a credit card and a cellphone can get two hours of charging from the 240-volt stations, also known as level 2 stations, providing enough power for most electric cars to travel 15 to 20 miles.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
$2.00 to drive maybe 20 miles.
Sound worth paying $40,000 for a Volt, huh?
Anybody remember vandalized pay phones?
How long do you think it will be before some punks start tearing these charging stations up?
I know George and I’m not surprised he caught this. Good Job! BUT he forgot to add in all the taxpayer subsidies and incentives to the cost of the 80 cars (7.5k each?). Also does that 5k per include install costs?
Good point!....Just how long do these dummy green politicians think it will be before they are all vandalized?....All the criminals have to do is tear apart the recharge station and wait for John Q Public to pull up and then rob him.
Thank you, Mayor Julian Castro, Obama lover, son of a vitriolic latina community organizer, for dragging what had become a fairly responsible city government back into the Democratic bog it hauled itself out of.
San Antonio: conservative populace led by flaming progressive p-c types. Makes me nuts.
These can’t be endlessly charged.
How many charges can these batteries take before they need to be replaced?
This is the same city council that approved an electric street car system to run across town( Express News and local media are in the bag for the libs and gays). We need an electric street car system like we need a huge fountain in front of a historical Catholic Church( oh wait, our last mayor had that done as well as closing some usually congested streets) Waste of our money and nobody says nutin.
You’ve got that right. And Julian has his eyes on the governorship (probably next term) and his brother is running for U.S. congress.
It would be cheaper to give everyone a horse. They can do 20 miles in 2 hours, and as bonus they could create extra government-union jobs for people to cleanup all the horse shit.
