WASHINGTON - Democratic Rep. Norm Dicks, a former UW football player who cast a giant presence over state and national politics for decades, announced Friday he'll retire at the end of the year after 18 terms in the U.S. House of Representatives.

one more future lobbiest to pay for dinner, drinks and “after dinner mints.”
Lots of rats abandoning the ship.....that obamacare vote ain’t turning out to be as popular as Nancy said it would!!
Poster boy for term limits.
To quote a certain book, “Throw them all out”.
Oh come ON, y’all! Give the guy a break...that is absolutely the toughest surname in the English language to carry around for life! (Well except for “Hogg”, and several others, perhaps;) If it were me, I would have changed my name to “Richards” a LONG time ago!;)
He’s been eating plenty of pork.
18 terms?
Him and his buddies in D.C. have done such a great job, why not another 18 terms?
Looks like he could use a few thousand more lunches and dinners at tax payer expense. Get his chauffeur to roll him over to chicken licken for a nice feed. Get him a couple whole chickens to bite on. On us of course!
nobody has mentioned that this seat is winnable now that it is open.
Doug Cloud, where art thou?
Young is running. others will jump in.

D+5 before redistricting.
So far it's Young and Sauerwine. Young is much stronger IMO. He is a strong conservative and is making the effort to do something, not just to be something.
Cicero,
Do you think he is related to the “OldsMoSub Commander” the deceased Ted Shumoo kennedy?
Could be. The article says this guy was a famous football player, before he started eating too much pork. And evidently Teddy once tried out for the Chicago Bears, but I guess even his Chicago Mob connections didn’t get him very far.
The WA-06 leans Democrat, but with Norm Dicks retiring we can win it. Jesse Young sounds like a great candidate: a local boy from an impoverished background who made good, and whose commonsensical, conservative views are a good fit for the district.

You've pretty much nailed it. Jesse worked hard and realized the goodness that America can offer to all who apply themselves. He values that opportunity, our heritage and our freedom and he is sacrificing a lot to try to preserve it for all of us including his young family.
If legislative term limits worked, California would be a utopia. It's had term limits for over 20 years. The result is new faces with the illusion of change while the real power rests in the permanent bureaucrats and lobbyists.

The Founding Fathers argued over this in the Federalist Papers and they came to the right conclusion.
I just read Reagan's autobiography and that was one his major complaints. He said the first rule of the bureaucracy is to protect the bureaucracy. Reagan also wanted a line item veto and a balanced budget amendment.
Little did I expect when I speculated on this district when the maps came out that the old coot would quit this year. I’m always glad to see one of the ancient rats go. Dave Kildee is quitting too leaving only Nick Rahall (if he wins) and Ed Markey from the House class of 1976.
This gives us a shot at a 6-4 delegation. (and technically the new 10th is possible to win as well but probably less so that the 6th)
I hope there is a free for all rat primary that get’s nasty.
Looks the rats have held the district since Dicks’ predecessor beat the incumbent Republican in 1964.
It is a great shame that there hasn’t been a sex scandal associated with this gentleman. I mean if Anthony Weiner was priceless....
Congressional staffers should have limited tenure as well.
California is a bad example for anything except showing the effects of socialism.
