COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) ' A Colorado doctor with a concealed-weapon permit said he grabbed his gun and guarded an exit at a medical building as dozens of people fled from a gunman who had taken two hostages.
Thank goodness someone besides the bad guy was armed and knew what he was doing.
Otherwise, we might very well be reading about a massacre this morning.
Dozens of lives were spared in the hostage situation in Colorado Springs Tuesday, partly because of one courageous surgeon. He was ready to do whatever it took to make sure everyone got out. Doctor Jeff Ferguson didn’t want it known that he’s licensed to carry a concealed weapon, but Tuesday-he didn’t have a choice, from the sound of the gunman’s voice, he felt like someone was going to get hurt. “If this guy opens this door, Im going to have to shoot him, Dr. Ferguson said. You were prepared to do that? I was absolutely prepared to shoot him, yes. SWAT team shot The gunman, he was the only one injured, medics rushed him into the E.R., where later he died. By the way this situation was over a Craiglist ad for a dog? This all took place in a medical facility, not a hospital.
I live in Denver and this is the first I’ve heard of this story?
Local paper, radio, TV, TV website????
If you find yourself in a situation like this, part of your thought process needs to include how you are going to identify yourself to law enforcement when they arrive. If it is safe to do so, a call to 911 to tell the dispatcher there’s a good guy with a gun at the scene might save your life.
Could this be the same ad that was posted here a couple days ago? That was about a swinging couple and her boyfriend who were searching for a dog on craigslist for her sexual purposes........I'M NOT KIDDING!
My approach will be to keep the gun concealed whenever possible. Don't draw it until you are ready to shoot. Re-holster when the need to shoot has passed.
I don't intend to obey any "lawful order" to touch my gun in the presence of armed officers. My hands will be high over my head and my fingers spread until the risk of being shot by the police has long passed.
No matter what is coming out of a LEO’s mouth, if his eye’s are seeing compliant subject, it should be enough. Hands up, no sudden moves, prone your self out if able.
That is true, In 1995 Sheriff John Wesley Anderson started issuing concealed carry permits to anyone over 21 with no felony, $60. for Training, $52.50 to CBI for background check, $ 13. Fingerprint fee and firearms training class are issued a 5 year permit. 5 Year renewal fee is about half price. The first thing law enforcement wants you to do is drop you weapon! No problem, bad guys are usually too dumb to drop it, like this guy. “Life is tough, but it’s tougher when you’re stupid.” John Wayne.
I hope you are aware of the killing of a concealed carry permit holder in Las Vegas.
He was spotted as being armed in a Costco, I believe it was, and reports phoned to the police stated that he was acting erratically. The man had exited Costco when several officers confronted him. He was probably confronted with ambiguous and conflicting orders from several of the officers. One may have yelled, "Drop the gun" while another yelled, "Raise your hands".
Conveniently for the police who killed the man, the video recorders outside Costco were not working. We will never know exactly what happened.
The lesson I learned from this man's death is that, if the police order you to "Drop the gun" and I am not holding the gun, I WILL NOT reach for the gun and attempt to drop it. To do so would be to provide justification for the police to kill me.
Did you see the comments? He was described as “mellow” and a hard worker. He looks like a friggin’ hitman, fer cryin’ out loud! What is WITH people these days???
Doc Sunday.
“A female tells KRDO NewsChannel 13 that she was the center of this hostage situation. She says that she put an ad on Craigslist to sell some puppies. A man contacted her and said that the price is too high and asked her to lower the price. When the girl refused, the man threatened to kill her. She says he found her on Facebook then confronted her at work. The girl’s boyfriend says the suspect’s name is Dominic Oliver. We are working to confirm this story and its connection with the hostage situation.”
weird
In a situation like that, the best bet is to slowly raise your hands and interlock your fingers behind your head. Cops see this as surrendering, so asking you to drop your gun would be a step back for them. At that point, they will probably rush you. Let them. Even if they decide to beat you on the ground your injuries will probably be less than if they shoot you.(*)
(*) Excepting that subway incident not too long ago, when a man on the ground was plugged with likely an accidental discharge.
I think I would be concerned that they might think I could reach a weapon hidden in the back of my shirt or jacket.
If you’re wearing such garments, then interlock fingers on top of your head. At that point, seriously, your most likely danger point is either an accidental discharge by a “n00b cop” (aggressive and stupid), or one so pumped full of steroids he thinks you are the “lizard king”.
Again, it would still not be uncommon today, even with ordinary cops, that once you are down, they will gratuitously abuse you. This can be anything from an asphalt shave, to knee in back, kick to head, or just too tight handcuffs.
It’s just easy for cops, after wrestling innumerable drunks and hard cases, to get over-forceful with polite people. Most are still professional.
I have family associated with that particular medical practice. It seems they are considering getting their license to carry.
IT CAN HAPPEN ANYWHERE.
