Advice for Mitt Romney: Form Is Substance
The American Spectator ^ | March 8, 2012 | Frank Schell

Posted on 03/08/2012 3:26:46 AM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

[SNIP of his laudatory praise of Mitt's "conservatism" and "potential"]

....First, Romney needs to slow down and speak more deliberately. He is much too wound up, seemingly with a sentence, phrase, or answer for all ideas and issues. He needs to look like he is thinking about what he is saying. Silence and pauses can be effective and dramatic when used properly. Even if it is the case, there is no need to strive to look like the smartest guy in the room. After all, that is what cabinet officials and White House czars are for.

[snip of Ronald Reaganisms to emulate]

Second,Romney needs to create an aura of crisis management with more gravitas (a word I dislike for its overuse but still use). Few would argue that this country is not in the worst economic and financial condition since the 1930s. Fundamental causes (trade and treasury deficits) go unremedied, and massive sacrifices will be required for America to live within its means and restore its competitiveness. The focus of the Obama Administration has been on excessively legislating and constraining American enterprise and talking down the successful, at a time when investment and entrepreneurship are needed more than ever.

Romney is a financial Green Beret and is senior enough and handsome enough to have a lot of gravitas. But he smiles too much -- and under America's grim circumstances he needs the right game face for a country in distress......

Third,Romney needs to tone down the blue jeans and button down shirts, a contradiction in and of themselves. Jeans are fine for touring the farm belt or national parks. But we need a leader who looks like a peer of heads of state, or a primus inter pares on the world stage. Romney has a fine tailor and he should..

Romney seems to be losing on all fronts -- no form, no substance, no nothing. BUT the GOP-e want conservatives to fold and give him their support.

Yeah; when pigs fly. But, really, Rick or Newt one need to pull out and leave the other to be the lone, non-Romney candidate. As long as they keep dividing the vote, Romney will keep winning. That’s how we ended up with John McCain. Hey, I’m a Newt guy, but, geesh....draw straws or something guys. Otherwise, before the Texas Primary on May 29th, with 155 Delegates, Romney will already be the designated nominee.

It just dawned on me who Rombomney reminds me of. A ;ot of people think he's another Juan McStain, many say Dole, still others Bush 1 or Bush II part 2.

They are all more or less on the right track, but he really reminds me of Tricky Dicky Nixon, who, in 1968 was a shoo-in to beat the klutzy Humphrey coming off the Johnson fiasco, and who won a landslide against probably the worst D candidate until the 21st Century, McGovern.

After winning a smashing victory on his second term, he left the Republicans with a weak kneed Ford who ushered in the disaster of the peanut farmer, and it took a real man to save both the country and the party!

Yep, Romney is the next Nixon. God help us.

I think there may be flaws in your logic.

First of all there are many on both sides of the Newt/Rick equation who will not vote for the “other” candidate. They will either stay home or vote for Romney. Read some of the posts on this site; and there are millions more out there w/the same views.

Second, I listened to an analysis on CNN yesterday. (They're really much more objective than FOX these days; while there is a Dem “slant” to be sure; it is nowhere near as “slanted” as the Romneybot cheerleaders on FOX.) From the CNN analyst's projections it is higly likely the GOP primaries will get drawn out past TX at the average rate Romney is “winning” delegates (less than 40%). The longer it gets drawn out the more time for both Rick and Newt to get their messages out and gather delegates of their own. Equally importantly, the longer this process is drawn out the less “electable” Mitt looks and the less solid his base of support. (It appears he is already starting to see “cracks” in his support based on media reports.)

Finally, I have a lot of respect for Sarah Palin and agree w/her on how we should proceed. Conservatives need to draw this out as long as possible and allow Newt to gather his delegates where he has geographic strength and allow Rick to do the same. This will act to keep the pressure on Romney by forcing him to fight a “dual front” war. Each day that goes by there is a better chance for a CONTESTED convention. (Not a “brokered” convention; which, as I understand the two terms, would not be advantageous to anyone but the GOP insiders.)

Caveat: I would add that this will require both Newt and Rick to allow the stronger candidate to compete unfettered in their strongest geographic areas. Newt appears to have been doing that so far in the Midwest; however, Rick, as usual, appears to be “doing his own thing” and started w/TN to push into Newt's strong areas. Rick now appears to be on the verge of doing the same in the rest of the South. If he does that, it will set off a political war between Newt and Rick and help Romney. The consequence of such action on Rick's part will be to lose many Newt supporters who might have supported Rick later if Newt drops out.

This will be at the Convention: NOT before!

What a garbage article. This is putting lipstick on a pig. HOW will changing out of his blue jeans, talking slower and smiling less change anything about his progressive past and moderate instincts?

The author doesn;t get that he is NOT trusted because of his liberal actions and opinions.

I hope this thing is still going by Convention time. But, I’m afraid that by mid-May, RINO-Rom will be the “assumed” nominee because Newt and Rick keep splitting the Conservative vote, giving Romney victory after victory.

Yes they are. FOX has been in the tank for RINO-Rom for months. Thanks for your input. The scary thing about the entire process: There are only a few “proportional” States left. Pretty soon, it will start being “winner-take-all” and that will benefit RINO-Rom if Newt and Rick divide the Conservative vote.

Another thing that scares me: I think Rick wants the VP spot. That should never happen. We need Rubio to carry FL and cut into Obozo’s Hispanic vote. Whoever wins FL will occupy the White House; guarantee it.

...Newt and Rick keep splitting the Conservative vote...

That's the idea.

THEN them split votes WILL come together to unite for the ANTI-Mitt candidate; the one who HASN'T been able to buy all of the air time to go SO negative.

Rick is a self promoting insider. He will always play self promoting insider games. It's all about what's best for Rick.

If Newt doesn't make it I will vote for whomever is the nominee ...Romney or Santorum ...doesn't matter to me; same ol’/same ol’ insider crap. Of the two Romney stands a better chance of beating Obama; but, to me it's just a choice of which loser one wants to back at that point.

Once this election is over I'm done w/the GOP ...if it wasn't for the military that are deployed I'd write in Newt if I had only Santorum and Romney to choose from.

And WHEN might that happen? Time is running out. We’re running out of States that allot Delegates “proportionally” and are about to enter into the “winner-take-all” era. Not looking good for our team.

Hi Elsie-

First off, I apologize for not getting back to you in a timely manner.

As to my remarks that I felt Romney has a better chance of winning than Rick; that is purely based upon the conditions as I see them. Romney has a tremendous organization, highly motivated and ruthless, Romney is much more likely to have the funding to match Obama and he polls much better nationally w/moderates and women ...key areas that the GOP nominee will need.

This does not mean I think that Romney is a better Conservative than Rick or that either one will beat Obama. I just see Romney as the most likely of the two to succeed.

Take care,

-Geoff

No problem: I wish that I had a life!

Your take on the matter seems quite possible; that AMERICA is going to be faced with the 'choice' of the lessor of two evils.

But...

Obama is the 'evil' we've seen; while Romney represents an evil that has been largely covered up.

"We've always been at war with Eastasia" may come into play as our Smiling Dictator brings his guns to bear on the one who likes cars, and lakes: lots of little lakes...
