ATLANTA (AP) - Georgia House lawmakers will debate whether to legalize hunting with silenced firearms in Georgia.

The House Game, Fish and Parks Committee is scheduled to debate a Senate bill Tuesday that would allow hunters to shoot with silencers, which suppress the noise coming from a gun when it's fired.

Well....I'm no expert.

I know this much....I've shot many 1,000 of rounds of .22 short and long...and 1,000's of rounds thru that CZ pistol....and that 7.26 x 25 is one loud ass round. Way louder than any .22 round I've shot.

I have just been....advised that it's a waste of money to buy a suppressor...if you are using super-sonic ammo. What do I know? I guess I should have been specific....

I've .308, .270, .243 rifles....I couldn't tell you what is the loudest though. Just bot the Winchester model 88, in .308...and love it. Less kick than the .270...I think, and shoots just as straight.

How do you feel about government dictating what we can and can't put on our rifles, useless or not?

That's my big issue.

I dislike the rail fetish that is currently going on, but I don't want it outlawed.

That's what this thread is about. Government control of a God-given right that was important enough to enumerate in the Constitution.

Here is a post from an owner of suppressors and an audio engineer. It has some interesting information on the level of dB from sonic crack alone:

“I am a lega NFA Suppressor owner.

I own both rifle and pistol suppressors.

I am also an audio engineer.

People having a polite conversation is about 70-79db. Any change in 3db will eiether double the amount of sound, or decrease it by half. At 86Db OSHA says you need hearing protection.

Most gun blasts are around 120db - they just sound louder because it isn’t an instant noise - it’s actually a long duration noise.

When a bullet travels less than 1100 fps it makes no noise. Above 1100fps it creates a vacuum behind it - the sound of the air slapping against itself when the vacuum colapses creats a loud crack! This crack travels behind the bullet until it transcends below 1100 fps. In a 22lr rifle or pistol using high velocity ammo this crack is around 90db, but from a high power rifle it reaches 140db or better.

When you slap a 33db 223 suppressor on an AR-15 firing factory ammo - the rifle’s report is totally removed but the ballistic crack travels down range. It’s a pretty loud crack. If the bullet traveled over your head at 600 yards - like what happens when you are in the pits scoring targets - you would need hearing protection. If you change the ammo to the 100gr Extreme Shock subsonic ammo - the only noise is the faint ‘ting’ as the brass is ejected.

On a 223 - 33db suppressor totally kills the sound. The less expensive suppressors are usually around 28db and do a great job - you can certainly shoot without hearing protection and carry on a conversation with the guy shooting - but you know he is shooting. Swap that 28db suppressor for a top model 33db and you would not know the guy is shooting - only the sound of the brass ejecting and bullet hitting the target down range would give it away.

Neat thing about suppressors - you can take 223 model (weights 28 ounces) and use it on 22 Hornet, 22-250, 17HMT, 22LR and some can do 243 Win. You can use a 223 on allot of different calibers.

A typical 22lr only weights 8 ounces.

If you buy a 30cal suppressor for a 308 or 300 win mag (38 ounces +) you can use that one suppressor on all calibers lower form 223 to all the other 30 cal rifles.

I wish the 1934 Gun Control Act did not include suppressors - thank you Hollywood! I would have been able to afford one sooner and saved my hearing.

If you have any questions - email me - ask the guy who owns one.”

I'm with you, on every point you mention

Can you tell me if my ears deceive me....when shooting a .22 versus a 7.26 x 25mm?

There's a big, giant difference....in my subjective / objective brain.

FWIW-

AAC and other companies sponsor “silencer only” shooting events. Pretty impressive to have a hundred guns on the line firing away for hours, and you don’t need earplugs. Oh, it’s noisy to be sure, but more rock concert noise than “OMG where’s my earplugs?!?!?”

The crack from a round going Mach+ is much less damaging than the powder going off.

Reading back......What does that mean?

.30 cal with between 5 and 10 grains of powder? According to my handloading book... vs... about 2 grains of powder and .22 cal?

Yep, the .30 cal is louder.

Both are supersonic.

Don’t get too worked up over the DB of the sonic crack, it is of short duration, and receding away (I would hope!) so constantly diminishing.

I shoot .30 cal supersonic suppressed, my own design, the sonic crack is not an issue compared to not having a suppressor.

I also shoot several other calibers, I am an 07/C2 suppressor manufacturer.
Wish I had been in a state that allowed them much sooner, my ears ring constantly, sometimes enough to wake me!

It may be too late, but I hope that avoiding unsuppressed shooting will allow some recovery.

IN typical MSM fashion these idiots are calling suppressors silencers.
People get the notion that a high power rifle can be silenced which just is not true.

You gotta love the fireball the CZ 52 produces LOL
I wish I had bought a threaded barrel though when they were available so I could spin on a flash suppressor.

When my daughter was 11 I took her on a father-daughter hunt on a 5000 acre private hunting club. A group of 6 does came within shooting range. She shot the first one and the group scattered, but they were back within a minute. She shot a second, then a third and they still didn’t take off. We could have killed them all but it didn’t even seem sporting.

Bottom line was the noise didn’t seem to bother them. A suppressor wouldn’t have made a bit of difference.

This was U.S. issue suppressor ca. 1969.
This is my old unit and I took this photo.
Typically the gas valve was closed because of the noise of the action.
