I think Newt’s getting bad advice from his math analyst advisors who want to keep their paychecks coming a little while longer. Or he’s got the same crack team on this that helped him get on the Virginia ballot.

Newt dropping out helps Rick in the 2/3rds of remaining winner-take-all (state/district) delegates, and can’t hurt much in the 1/3rd remaining of proportional delegates. The difference Rick could gain would probably be enough to stop Romney in both the primary and in a floor fight.

What job do you think Newt would offer Santorum at the convention to have him support him? I think VP would only work. Your thoughts?

Question: Would Santorum be much closer to Milt’s total delegates if Newt had accepted that he has no traction outside the south, and withdrew? Answer: Yes.
Newt stating that he is hurting Milt is a lie. Everything is about Newt. I used to like the guy, sort of, but he is showing himself to be just another pol with little concern about America facing a choice between a socialist and a Communist. Bob

I would like to, respectfully, point out, to each of you, that the President of the United States has no control over the federal budget. He can pressure party members into voting one way or the other, and he can direct department heads once money is allocated, but the actual allocation of funds is controlled by the Congress.

Arguing over who did or did not have a better fiscal record while in Congress, in order to choose a candidate, is an ultimate waste of time. Let’s chose something that matters like: can candidate A influence Congress effectively? Can Candidate B correctly judge the need for deployment of troops to a regional hot spot? Does Candidate C have the stones to veto a grossly unconstitutional nightmare of a bill?

It is absolutely not a waste of time because a person’s record reveals their governing philosophy. Santorum’s is one of a fiscally irresponsible big government statist.

Gee, if only Ross Perot had run for president we would have never gotten Clinton...same insane paralogism.

How about, “Does a candidate have a record of honesty and truthfulness?”

Becasue a poltician who has a record as a chronic liar and less than honest in public dealing before the election, is unlikely to have a profound conversion to honesty and veracity upon election to office.

Gingrich is hoping that his hanging on like a leech will entitle him to the VP slot under Mittens.

Didn’t he already promise it to Ron Paul’s kid?

It’s really a tough call. What worries me to have Santorum on ticket is the media will scare the public by making him seem too extreme. He could certainly hold his own in a debate with Biden. But does Newt add to the ticket by picking another conservative? I’m think putting Paul Ryan on ticket is a good move. The whole thing started when Newt “undermined” Ryan’s budget and it would be ironic and another example of the media mischaracterizing the whole thing if Newt joined forces with Ryan. Ryan helps in the North and would be a great guy to pass the torch too after Newt’s 8 years. So Santorum ends up in the cabinet. I just don’t know where. Of course if Romney gets 1,144, all this doesn’t matter. Then it could be the other way. Santorum asks Newt to be on team, but making Newt VP would be wasting his talent. Just make him a top advisor.

I agree. We would have 2008 all over again which did us no favors. Oh the democrats will have that problem too with Biden not running for President ever. I think if Newt is the nominee, have Santorum be Secretary of State and if Santorum is the nominee than have Newt be Secretary of State. I think they both would be perfect for the job. Santorum because he is very engaging and likable and would impress the foreign dignitaries (obviously without bowing all over the place) and Newt would just impress them with his knowledge and foreign policy.

>> I will make this absolutely clear to you: Romney and Santorum are both fiscally liberal, big government spenders.

Santorum IS a big government, establishment bit player! That’s why he is pulling stronger with women.

There really aren’t that many Conservatives. Many are in fact just patriotic Statists and pseudo Socialists.

Can Congressional budgets pass without Senate nor Executive approval?

I do not trust Rick Santorum. I do not trust people who tell me how moral and religious they are. My choices were Gingrich or Romney. I went Gingrich and I know I am not alone in this. If Newt was not in the race, this would be over and Romney would already be passing out buttons.

That would be a valid point if, and only if, you were taking apart every single bill they voted on and diving into the political realities of each. We’re FReepers, we know better than to fall for the old “he voted against spending for our troops!” (or similar taglines) without investigating why and finding out that the same bill had a PP rider attached.

Congressional budgets pass with Senate approval, thus the name “Congressional”. The Budget is then used as a framework for the specific appropriations bills which the President must sign into law. Of course he could veto these bills - and have that veto be the easiest veto over-ride vote in the history of the US Congress. The President even submits a “budget” to Congress. Want to guess how much of that budget ever makes it into a Congressional Budget Act?

Honesty and Truthfulness are wonderful qualities in any man. Before we start casting stones, however, we’d best examine our own records. We’d also be wise to have exact wording and context of so called “lies”.

Lie (noun) a statement that is not true; lie (verb) to say something that is not true.

Anything to quibble with above?

"Lie (noun) a statement that is not true; lie (verb) to say something that is not true."

You mean like, “As long as I am Speaker of this House, no gun control legislation is going to move in committee or on the floor of this House and there will be no further erosion of their rights.”?

Senator Santorum Flat Out Lies About Steel Industry Bailout:

Senator Santorum on Meet The Press 2/26/12 claims he never voted for a bailout of the steel industry. Rather he asserts that what he voted for was to enforce tariffs on China.

H.R. 1664: here is the summary of the bill from senate.gov:

An Act providing emergency authority for guarantees of loans to qualified steel and iron ore companies and to qualified oil and gas companies, and for other purposes.

Verbiage directly within the bill itself:

SEC. 101. EMERGENCY STEEL LOAN GUARANTEE PROGRAM. (a) SHORT TITLE.—This chapter may be cited as the ‘‘Emergency Steel Loan Guarantee Act of 1999’’.

(f ) LOAN GUARANTEE PROGRAM.—
(1) AUTHORITY.—The Program may guarantee loans provided to qualified steel companies by private banking and
investment institutions in accordance with the procedures,
rules, and regulations established by the Board.
(2) TOTAL GUARANTEE LIMIT.—The aggregate amount of loans guaranteed and outstanding at any one time under this section may not exceed $1,000,000,000.

It really doesn’t get anymore cut-and-dried than that. The word “tariff” does not even appear in the bill - not once.

You want more?

So you expect Santorum, on a February 2012 TV interview to remember the exact verbiage of a bill he voted on in 1999? And if he misspeaks, you call it a lie?

How about this one of Newt's:

"I do."

He's actually told that one at least twice, not to voters, constituents or media, but to persons much closer to him...
