Republicans Should Avoid Social Issues

Rick Santorum could be the worst thing to happen to the GOP — ever. Worse even than George W. Bush. And that’s saying a lot. Bush did so much damage to the GOP brand, he almost destroyed the party forever. It was George Bush who brought us Barack Obama. Few Americans voted for Obama, they just voted for ABB (Anyone But Bush).

Now the GOP has a golden opportunity. Obama has wrecked the U.S. economy from sea to shining sea. He has turned off voters by the millions. By historical standards, based on the current disastrous economic and unemployment numbers, Obama is virtually unelectable. Obama is a magician. He has made voters forget Bush in only three years. That's a pretty darn amazing trick.

The proof is in the recent polls. This has been perhaps the worst month for the GOP in modern political history. The message is no longer jobs, rising gas prices, chronic long-term unemployment, or crumbling real estate.

The message is about women’s health, the right to use contraception, Planned Parenthood funding, Rush Limbaugh’s use of a crude term to describe a young female law student, and whether Republicans like sex, or hate women. It just doesn’t get any worse than this. And in recent polls, Mitt Romney is leading President Obama.

We must not let the MSM define Rick Santorum. Period.

Rick Santorum must not let the MSM define Rick Santorum. Period. Unfortunately, he naively keeps stepping into their traps.

Consult? Please. Who would pay so much for mere advice? Using a Mitt supporter as an example of other bad behavior is a funny defense.
I don’t care if he lobbied for private companies or groups, but for F&F? There’s something unclean, almost unholy about it.
There’s no debate however about his scholarly bona fides. Just like Wilson.

If abortion is your *SOLE* issue, then you cannot be a conservative.

Mind you, I said *SOLE* issue.

For if it is, then you are willing to do anything to correct it. *ANYTHING*.

Which means that our Constitution means nothing to you. Freedom means nothing to you. Free speech, right to bear arms, no unreasonable search and seizures, etc, etc, etc... all mean *NOTHING*.

And they already mean nothing to a liberal.

So, if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck and is wet like duck...

Got that right!

I’d say he *EAGERLY* steps into those traps. And that’s the problem. He’s mostly focused on the issues that trap him. The issues that motivate the TEA party... he just ‘phones in’.

Every single non-social issue he campaigns on sounds like a ‘Cliff Notes’ version of what Newt said 2-3 weeks prior.

What Republicans need to do is avoid letting the media or the opposition “turn” the discussion! This last month has been a great example of that. We had the Obama administration on the RUN because of their idiotic attack on religious freedom. Then Rush put his foot in it with that stupid Fluke debacle — and that was all the rabid MSM needed, to ignore the greater issue and jump onto Slutgate, which was of little consequence, really. Thus the discussion was “turned,” like a rodeo clown grabbing one horn of a bull to turn it the direction he wants it to go. The Democrats and the Dems in the MSM are EXPERTS at turning the public discourse in the directin they want it to go!

ALL of our people need to stop letting them turn the public discussion into misleading avenues. It is killing our numbers. And Ricky is very guilty of that. He is like a dog that just can’t resist jumping at the bone waved in front of him.

If social conservatives viewed the state the same way fiscal conservatives do, then they would be satisfied converting believers in their churches and competing for the morality of man in the free marketplace of ideas. Instead they more closely resemble their leftist brethren who prefer to use the power of the state to compel the rest of us to behave in the manner they deem appropriate.

Any logical or factual based discussion is generally pointless as both the leftist and the social conservative will near immediately resort to name calling or painting with a broad brush. Anyone who disagrees with a leftist is a racist and anyone who disagrees with a social conservative is a moral degenerate.

Very true.

Highlighting the Obama-generated economic carnage is not equivalent to an abandonment of conservative principles. Why not adhere to a "marketing strategy" with a successful track record?

Find me a fiscal conservative who considers themselves moderate on social issues, and I’ll show you a liberal.

Are you kidding??? There's lots of money in consulting -- all kinds of consulting. He took F&F as a consulting client, true -- he was in business; businesses pretty much take the clients that present themselves. Do you suppose law firms, for example, turn down clients because they're not morally pristine?

There’s a fiscal “conservative” considering another run in my district as a democrat after socially AND fiscally conservative Tim Walberg beat him in 06.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2858355/posts

Schwarz lost the seat in the 06 primary and mounted a write in campaign in the final weeks of the general election. In 08 he endorsed the democrat in that race. In 2010 he endorsed the democrat until a moderate republican challenged. When that moderate lost, he switched his endorsement back to the democrat who lost in the general election.

He spends most of his life whining about us bible thumping extremists who want to force all women to spend their lives barefoot and pregnant. BTW his fiscal “conservatism” includes forcing us all to pay for abortions.

Since when do we have to have governmental politicians do the job the church is called to do?....

The church can't throw abortion doctors in jail and stop states from redefining marriage as two women and one cow or whatever they think up.

Would you agree to amend the constitution so that Speaker of the House is no longer two heartbeats away from the presidency?

For our current Speaker, I'd consider it.

Unfortunately, social conservatives take that to mean that the state must compel moral behavior from an unwilling populace. That doesn’t work; it just breeds resentment against the state.

Nice try. It actually means that we'd prefer the government not sanction or attempt to pay for it.

“I am sure that never was a people, who had more reason to acknowledge a Divine interposition in their affairs, than those of the United States; and I should be pained to believe that they have forgotten that agency, which was so often manifested during our Revolution, or that they failed to consider the omnipotence of that God who is alone able to protect them.”

The Constitution does not specify who is next in line after the Vice President--it leaves that to Congress to determine. By the law on succession to the presidency adopted in 1947 (with later amendments) the Speaker of the House in next after the Vice President. (Of course the 25th amendment now provides a way to pick a new Vice President if the Vice President dies, resigns, or becomes President, so it's not likely to go past the Vice President unless both the President and Vice President are killed at the same time.)

Earlier the Secretary of State was next in line and some people think that would be a better rule. If Wilson had been defeated by Charles Evans Hughes in 1916 (he would have been if Hughes had not lost California by a very narrow margin), his plan was to appoint Hughes Secretary of State, and then he and the Vice President would have resigned, making Hughes Acting President--to avoid the danger to the country in having a rejected President still in charge while World War I was going on.

Hughes was later Secretary of State under Harding and Coolidge--if between August 1923 and March 1925 Coolidge had died in office, Harding would have succeeded to the Presidency.

In that case, I don't know if he would have been called "Acting President" or "President."

He doesn’t sound very fiscally conservative, that’s for sure. Government funded abortion? Why the %$#! is government supposed to pay for health insurance of people in the first place!?!

Nice try, but see post #74 as example of my point.

Yet another social conservative wanting government to compel behavior from an unwilling populace.
