Republican presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich returned to a favorite target, slamming the Chevrolet Volt as an impractical vehicle, while stumping on the campaign trail in Louisiana Wednesday, three days ahead of that state's primary.
"I've tried to explain this psychologically, you can't put a gun rack in a Volt," Gingrich said to supporters in Pineville, La., repeating a line of attack he used in February.
Last month, however, one Chevy driver set out to prove the former Speaker wrong by actually building a gun rack into the back of his Volt, which he documented in a video posted to YouTube.
The former House Speaker did in fact acknowledge the YouTube challenge Wednesday, but pointed out that there might be another problem with the electric car.
"Now to be honest, there's actually, after I said that a couple times, there's actually a YouTube video of guy in Atlanta, who owns a Volt, who put a gun rack in the trunk, but a friend of mine, who was a hunter down in Camilla, looked at it and said 'yeah you can get the gun rack in the trunk, but then where do you put the deer?'" said Gingrich to laughter from the audience.
Gingrich has repeatedly mocked the Volt and President Obama's plan to provide subsidies for plug-in electric cars.
"Since we're all about to run out of oil, I guess the government has to be responsible and it's a very different model," he said. "Part of that model was, of course, to force us into smaller and smaller and smaller cars, so the president likes the Volt, the Volt gets a $7,500 tax credit if you buy one."

Purchase a Romney Pet mount for the Volt’s roof...put the deer in that.
Sanctimonium doing what he does best, stealing Newt's ideas, words, thoughts and plans... It is really getting pathetic... really. I actually thought he's be too embarrassed to do this outrightly, he usually steals Newt's stuff on the sly, but I guess you can never think too little of Santorum...
All right, it's really embarrassing for Rick at this point. And I'm supposed to want Newt to drop out so I can support HIM?
The guy w/ the gun rack threw together some PVC and made a video to disprove Newt's assertion that a gun rack couldn't fit in his car. Newt certainly is keeping everyone busy (Obama is running around the country trying to make voters believe that he's the energy president) and Santorum ran out to get an etch-a-sketch because Newt was out on the stump using one to make well targeted comments against Romney.
Good one! I hope there's room in the Volt for strapping and a blanket to protect the roof. Maybe they could purchase a collapsible box to squeeze in that back area. Then they could go out and find out where they can, "Buy me a huntin' license."
The Buck doesn`t stop at the White House.
I am not going to touch that with a ten foot pole.
It is SO hard for me to give up on Newt. I am having trouble getting used to the idea of the RicknMitt bores. The thrill is gone.
Mitt "heh heh heh you wanna bet I'd be a better president?" Romney will appear weak and foolish because he is essentially weak and foolish.
A debate with Gingrich would be like a blood sport- I'd opay money to see that
Gingrich should offer to put up $1million to Obama's campaign for a debate RIGHT NOW (winner takes all)
Just put that cooler in that gooseneck trailer you’re pulling.
Oh wait!
In the headlights silly
Lash it to the fender or where ever and take it home.
The metro gun rack
Lol, now that’s funny.
As an aside, it is liberalism personified to put a rifle where you can’t get at it.
Sigh. I understand your sentiments commpletely. He is just so much brighter, more articulate and creative than the others....it makes me sad that others don’t see it.
Having said that, he is through. I’m enjoying the show he’s putting on though.
Hank
i have no idea how big a volt is, but if i can get all my gear, guns, beer bottles, etc packed into either my a4 or my jeep- both that already have subs in them- a volt can take a gun and a cooler, right?
