The fear of martial law
Renew America ^ | 3/21/2012 | Alan Caruba

The President of the United States of America, Barack Hussein Obama, has generated so much fear that the most common theme of posted comments and private communications is that he will refuse to relinquish power if defeated in November or that, under some pretext, he will declare a state of martial law.

Many, myself included, did not like the Patriot Act that was enacted following 9/11 but there is little evidence that this law has been abused to deprive Americans of their fundamental rights and freedom, though surely some suspected of being terrorists were detained.

An Executive Order posted on the White House website on Friday, March 16, 2012, has generated a wave of fear. It is officially about "National Defense Resources Preparedness" and its stated policy addresses "national defense resource policies and programs under the Defense Production Act of 1950."

Its stated policy is that "The United States must have an industrial and technological base capable of meeting national defense requirements and capable of contributing to the technological superiority of its national defense equipment in peacetime and in times of national emergency." (Emphasis added)

In 1950 the nation was entering a new phase of history following World War II. It would be called the Cold War led by the then-Soviet Union, but 1950 is also important because on October 1, 1949, Mao Zedung had proclaimed the birth of the People's Republic of China, instituting a Communist regime that continues to this day. With German and Japanese totalitarian threats vanquished, new ones were emerging.

So if he wins a 2nd term, will he try to stick around for a 3rd or 4th? I think so. He'll use the same jingoistic line the Dems have used since Al Gore: "Make every vote count!" "Follow the will of the People!" Just like Zeleya of Honduras. They are banking that the majority of the People don't know squat about the US Constitution, don't WANT to know, WON'T read it, and DON'T care what it says. After all, we now have sitting SCOTUS justices who think the Constitution is some old quaint piece of paper written by dead white men who couldn't possibly understand the modern world of women and non-whites.

Every group not in power wishes the in-power opposition would do something horrible just to justify acting on the pent-up rage and punish/rectify imagined ills.

You're right. The long story of humanity.

“Indeed, I’ve been hearing “President X is going to impose martial law & cancel elections!” for several decades”

BS. I sure as hell haven’t. This is the FIRST time in my lifetime I’ve heard this concern so frequently, so seriously.

“Didn’t someone say it about George Washington? I cannot remember who, but I’m pretty sure someone”
********************************

Seems to me....Washington (George, that is) barely got off his hoss, after the election, when he personally led two state militias in the field...to do what?...impose taxes for the new fed gunmint...in the territories..... where people didn’t have a vote...all hearsay, of course...and prolly one of them thar “conspiracy theories” we hear so much about...

Semper watching!

Eggsactly! I resent the "fear" label...I don't fear anything about Obozo; in fact, my guess is the reason the Obozos even dream up a law like this is their fear of US!!

Obozo knows that all over rural America the true Patriots are quietly cleaning and oiling their weapons.

“Didn’t someone say it about George Washington?”

Probably, and they were right. Not only did he invoke martial law, but he actually rode into the field as CIC.

"Many, myself included, did not like the Patriot Act that was enacted following 9/11 but there is little evidence that this law has been abused to deprive Americans of their fundamental rights and freedom"

How would you know Alan? Under George W Dum-Dum (and now under his Communist successor), the range, scope and reach of the federal behemoth has expanded beyond any rational sense, the limited 'transparency' (I use that word loosely) under GWB is practically non-existent under the Kenyan Usurper, the fascist DHS and their jackboot sockpuppets over at TSA are turning America into a true police state, the Bill of Rights is on life support, financial chaos lurks behind the curtains due to the insane economic policies that were begun during the Bush years, and now continued and expanded under the 0bama regime.

And let's not forget the focused and determined efforts of the Holder DOJ to undermine the Second Amendment.

Why wouldn't there be a fear of martial law?

B/c they can.

There’s nothing sacrosanct about the military. They’re certainly not, as a group, any more noble than anyone else. When they get the order to fire on civilians, take their property etc they’ll do it. They might not like it but they’ll do it. Anyone thinking otherwise will have a rude and perhaps terminal eye opening.

Dictator Baby-Doc Barack is proving himself to be a blithering idiot.

Obama says what he thinks his audience wants to be true, and then expects us to believe his lie.

“I think the military would follow his orders w/o question.”

Very hard to say. Some in the military could get access to nukes or form an alliance with overseas purveyors of nukes. A mushroom cloud (or the threat of one) over DC would not be unthinkable in the event of an hussein dictatorship.

We have never really had a dictator in the US(unless you consider FDR a dictator), and it is difficult to predict how citizens or the military would react.

I’ve said the military will do what they are told many times only to be countered with no they won’t many are Oathkeepers. But, I wonder how many are Oathkeepers? Furthermore, the police are not for our protection their duty is to protect government.

Whiskey Rebellion. George called out the militia. Congress passed a federal tax on whiskey. Backwoods sorts in Pennsylvania did not like it. Washington pardoned all involved in the rebellion that got nasty at times. He proved his point and did not feel the need, like Hamilton, to kill more people to make a point. Showed the feds had teeth unlike the Articles of Confederation that allowed Shays Rebellion. Shays was one reason for the convention being called. The feds. were useless in stopping Daniel Shays. It was applauded at the time but it did show the case the Anti-Federalists made against the feds.
