n elderly Jewish man was murdered by an unknown attacker with a hammer Monday in the city of Fez.

The 74-year-old victim, whose name has not yet been released, worked in property management for rentals owned by other Jews.

According to reports in Moroccan media, the elderly victim was seen being hit repeatedly by a man wielding a hammer.

The murderer fled the scene. Police are investigating to determine whether the attack was nationalist or criminal in nature.

Critically injured, he died as he was being rushed to King Hassan II University Hospital.

Earlier Monday, thousands of demonstrators stormed the parliament building in the capital city of Rabat. The protesters torched Israeli flags and expressed anger at the presence of Israeli envoy David Saranga, who was in the city to attend a meeting of the Euro-Mediterreanean Partnership (EUROMED), in advance of the Global March to Jerusalem set for this Friday, an event scheduled for the Arabs' annual "Land Day" protest.

Saranga, who was expected to remain in the country until nightfall before flying to Brussels, instead was quietly escorted through a side door from the building. He was taken to the airport and immediately boarded a flight for Paris instead.

Good thing the Jewish guy didn’t have a gun - Al Sharpton is busy at the moment.

As a young boy, I read a biography of General Patton. In it, it told how before he landed his army in Morocco, he worried that the Arabs would start a pogrom against the Jews in the absence of order, especially if he had to fight the French.

I thought, “wait a minute - the Arabs are supposed to hate the Jews because of Israel and the Palestinians, but Israel didn’t even exist at that time....”

It started a change in my thinking, even as a kid.

One of Hitler's ideas for implementing the Final Solution, was to ship all of the Jews to Palestine, essentially turning it into one large Concentration Camp, and then letting the Arabs do the Nazis' dirty work for them.

they had issues even during the Mandatory period.

Palestine Police (a British force) had to keep them apart.

It was good to revisit that Short Story.

More pertinent as time goes by...

Problem: There are more of them than us. They are better at killing than us...

Oh, we're just not properly motivated, like we were in '44 and '45. If we could just recreate that spirit I'm sure we'd manage well enough.

It’s been 11 years since 9/11, a day of infamy that dwarfed Pearl Harbor. There were some stirring speeches, lots of new enlistments, military victories and setbacks, and then everyone got bored and played a new game: Let’s forgive ourselves for once having been racists and elect an ass-clown who happens to be black. Boy was that cathartic, but Obama sucks. Now let’s play a new game. Which ass clown should we elect now?

"Morocco was by many measures the most sane and Western of the arab/muslim nations."

You're right. I was in Morocco three years ago (Tangier) and it was not unusual to see a Catholic church within sight of a Jewish synagogue which was across the street from a mosque. Morocco has long been much closer to the West than other Muslim countries and more tolerant of various religions.

Their constitution actually mandates tolerance for all mono-theistic religions. I guess Hindus are out, but most others are apparently OK. While I was there I never felt threatened but I did notice that security around our group was pretty tight. There had been a bombing in Casablanca a year or two before and had been other low-level rumblings of Islamist sympathy in the country so I think they were beginning to watch for it more diligently. However, everyone I talked to seemed genuinely warm and friendly. Though they are primarily Muslim they are not Arabs, they are Berbers, and as such have a different identity and traditions.

There is a large mansion in Tangier that belonged to Malcolm Forbes when he was alive. Tangier also is home to the American School, which has existed there for over 60 years and is designed to provide Moroccans with a Western-style education. Credits there are recognized by most U.S, Canadian, and European colleges and universities. A local college professer there told us that Moroccan students are required to learn at least one foreign language and that most choose English as it is considered the language of business. This same professor, upon hearing my wife ask where she could buy some fresh-baked bread that we had seen them baking, said "You want bread? Just a minute." He disappeared down the street and returned a couple of minutes later with a fresh loaf. When my wife asked him how much she owed him he refused to take anything from us saying, "No no no. It's just bread!" That type of hospitality was common during our visit.

Morocco is a fascinating country that has so far managed to somehow avoid being sucked into the bottomless pit of Islamic fanaticism. It would be a tragedy to see it fall as the others have, but I am not too optimistic that it won't happen eventually.

Mandatory period (1918-1948): 1921 Pogrom in Jerusalem. 1929 Pogrom in Hebron, Jerusalem, and just about everywhere. 1933-1936 Arab uprising, 2000 Jews killed. 1947—1948 multiple massacres of Jews in Gush Etzion.

Ottoman period (1516-1918): I’m still reading up on it, but plenty of bad stuff. 1841 pogroms throughout Middle East due to Damascus blood libel, later made a miniseries on Egyptian TV (the blood libel portrayed as fact, not the pogroms). 1771 pogrom in Hebron due to blood libel. That just off-hand.

Mamluke period: Likewise.

Isaac married Rebecca when she was three. I think he at least waited ‘til after puberty to consummate it, though.

Yep, I really do hope that Morocco can show some “pushback” against the crazies. Morocco has a very highly developed tourist industry, especially along the coast where skimpy European swimsuits are tolerated. If the crazies have their way, this leading income producer for Morocco will be wiped out. In Egypt, the MB etc is strong enought to demand shariak, regardless of what it does to the tourist economy. In Morocco, I hope we see some pushback. I hope. If they can’t resist the sharia uber alles lunatics in Morocco, there is no hope for any muslim nation to resist.

I find Morocco especially fascinating. As you say, the links to Europe run deep, back to the corsair days of the “Sale Raiders” and so on. Then the Moriscos were expelled from Spain and resettled in Morocco, making another very deep connection.

My next novel is going to be set there, for many of the reasons explained on this thread, the place is just a treasure trove of cultural conflicts and cross currents. The Berber/Arab split you mentioned. The King’s wife is a Berber who looks Irish, and makes a point of being seen with long flowing hair. Since the King is considered in the direct line to Mohammed, it’s hard for the sharia lunatics to condemn this!

Heck, the King is also a yachtsman and SURFER, and has really led Morocco well in my Western opinion. Of course, to the sharia maniacs, he is a traitor to islam. But he has the military and business classes and most of the people firmly on his side. I sure hope that the sane Moroccans can resist the shariah nuts. What a terrible waste of a people and a great country.

As I mentioned up thread, Morocco is within 10% of California in coastline, mountains, prime agro area, and population. It could be a great wonder of the world. It has everything: fisheries, minerals, you name it. Only one thing holds it back: islam.
