Illinois residents can now legally mail order ammunition

Gun owners in Illinois will now be able to legally mail order ammunition from intra-state gun sales locations.

Senate Bill 681 was sponsored by State Sen. Dave Luechtefeld (R-Okawville) and passed the Senate on March 28. It allows an Illinois resident to buy ammunition through the mail from an in-state federal firearm-licensed retailer or seller of ammunition. The bill is supported by the Illinois State Rifle Association and National Rifle Association.

“Only in Illinois would it be illegal to order ammunition from an Illinois point of purchase. Currently, a resident can purchase ammunition through the mail from Wyoming, Florida or any other state, but here,” Luechtefeld said. “The measure is a mere clean-up that will help facilitate business transactions.”

Luechtefeld said it does not preempt any portions of the FOID Card Act and is strictly meant as a means for current FOID card holders to purchase intra-state ammunition easier.

The bill is now awaiting a committee assignment in the House of Representatives.

So, the title appears to be a bit premature. It's written like the governor signed it, or they just voted to override his possible veto, or being Illinois, his probable veto, IMHO.

What’s amazing is that it was ever illegal.

Damn!

And I have ordered cases of ammo in the past a number of times from Ammoman, cheaper than dirt, Midway, etc. All I had to do is fax a copy of my FOID and I was good to go.

I actually ran into this insanity. While Ammoman can ship me case lots of 7.62 Russian and 5.56 NATO from New Jersey of all places, ordering a single box of .45 ACP was from someone in IL was strictly verboten.

Unreal.

"What’s amazing is that it was ever illegal."

what's even more amazing that anyone would want records of them buying ammo which includes a delivery address.

I watched Red Dawn and saw what the enemy invaders did to people who left paper trails when they bought guns and ammo.

That is why I have never bought either. Not taking the chance. I am a good little subject of the FedGov...

Oh well, in the end I still prefer to roll my own. I tend to trust my work over others when using things that go BOOM in my hands.

Roger that. But back when 5.56 green tip was less than $200/M, delivered, I was buying it primarily for the brass. And 7.62 X 39 is still so cheap it's not worth reloading it, at least not when I'm feeding a $300 WASR. So for my mil-surp and C&R boom sticks it's bulk buys. For the good stuff, it's hand rolls.

And then, as per the Sweathogs on “Welcome Back, Kotter”, they can insert the bullets manually.

I have a feeling that this and other wacky IL gun laws are relics of Prohibition, wanting to make it tough for Capone’s boys to reload their Tommy guns, etc. etc...These laws have long outlived their usefulness but spineless legislators won’t strike them down.
