Newt Gingrich Admits Romney Will 'Probably' Win As He Vows To Stay In Race Empty of funds, Gingrich adds that Mitt Romney is 'clearly the frontrunner' but remains defiant against calls for him to quit
Ewen MacAskill 30 March 2012
Newt Gingrich has come the closest yet to acknowledging what just about everyone else in the political world has already decided: that he has no chance of becoming the Republican presidential candidate and that Mitt Romney is going to be the winner.
Interviewed on WTMJ radio on the campaign trail in Wisconisn ahead of its Tuesday primary, Gingrich virtually admitted defeat, conceding that front-runner Mitt Romney will "probably" secure the necessary 1,144 delegate majority.
But he still insisted he is still not yet ready to wind up his own campaign. Usually, a candidate in Gingrich's positition would quit: he has won just two states, with little chance of any further victories, his funds have dried up, he has cut his campaign staff and the last two reporters following him full-time have been withdrawn.
In spite of the humiliation, he insists he will remain in the race until the Republican convention in Tampa, Florida, in August or until such time as Romney reaches the magic 1,144 majority of delegates, which could happen in May or June.

Ouch.
I’ve posted multiple times over the past couple of years that Romney has bought, and paid for this nomination. Newt’s making him buy more than he thought he had to.
Good for Newt. Hang in there all you can’ Newt.
I read somewhere else a forward looking analysis of delegate totals as of a couple of days ago. If true, Romney would still be around 11 delegates short. If that's the case, one or two smaller States could decide the nomination.
As Gingrich appears to be losing all of the future races and since we're in winner take all territory, a Gingrich endorsement or even an early ticket could make the difference.
Now, this doesn't mean that Santorum will win enough delegates prior to the convention, but it could get what Gingrich has been promoting....a brokered convention.
Today I attended the first meeting for the campaign workers for Rick Santorum in Nebraska. Wednesday we are having a formal campaign opening. The turnout was great and people were really excited. RIck is in it to stay, all the way to the convention if necessary.
SANTORUM 2012!!!
romney won nothing. He didn’t buy it either...he stole it...and santorum helped him do it.
The media learned NOT to cover Newt, because the more we saw of him the more we liked him
“If Gingrich truly wanted to stop Romney, He and Santorum must join forces.”
Newt tried awhile back but Rick was not interested.
That is a fact.
They showed Newt speaking on this, and he DID NOT SAY THAT MITT WILL BE THE WINNER. He only said that IF Mittens wins he will support him.
Newt did not declare Mittens the winner. At least not what I heard. They twisted this to be what they wanted to hear.
Posts 6 & 7 sum up what happened.
The candidacy of Newt Gingrich has Little-Green-Footballized FR.
I was one of the first on the board to declare for Santorum, but I didn’t know how liberal his fiscal record was when I did so. Still, I held firm, but he kept making foolish remarks that propel Romney to an easy victory. I will still vote for him if he is on the TX ballot on May 29, but for all intents and purposes, as they say, Romney has it in the bag and has had for several weeks. Divided conservative opposition can never prevail against mammoth liberal Republicans, who control the party machinery.
I think you are quite correct in this judgment. It's a matter of who will endorse Romney first, Rick or Newt.
Santorum is a Romney man from way back, except for this period when he got a head on about defeating the man he was playing straw horse for (I came to like it it also in the last couple of weeks).
Remember that Santorum is an old “Arlen Specter for President”, “Mitt Romney for President”, kind of guy.
Santorum is pretty moderate, remember his Reagan supporters as “fringe” period, and his pro-abortion days.
If Gingrich truly wanted to stop Romney, He and Santorum must join forces.
What would happen if this occurred? Could Rick and Newt (Rick on top of ticket, sorry Newt) combine to become a team at or before the convention? I’ve never heard of something like that happening, but could it? Are the delegates binding, or could they swing their votes to Rick/Newt?
I think the party and most Republicans will support Romney (if he gets the nomination) if for no other reason than to get Obama out of the White House. But if Rick/Newt were to join forces, I could see a tidal wave of excitement, particularly among the more conservative of the party. That would carry over to the wishy-washy Independents, who don’t really know what they believe.
I suppose something could happen.
If Washington had given up when it looked bad the nation wouldn’t exist. Newt is a student of history.
He cannot win. Obama will do to him 10x more, what he did to his primary opponent's. Had Newt been able to talk about Bain, romney would be gone now. Does the RNC really think Obama won't talk about Bain? There is plenty of ammunition there to take him out in a short amount of time.
Yes, Rick has made some mistakes. Can you imagine having the people just lie about you, twist your words or cause such hatred towards you that feel so frustrated. He gets very few breaks and you can see he is really tired. romney can use his money, Rick does the hard leg work.
I believe in Rick, because he sees beyond the economy. He talks about the economy, but also important issues that everyone is pretending isn't a problem. He takes on those hard issues.
Over the years Rick has gotten more and more conservative. You can see that he is trending the right way. You also know he is who he says he is. He will tell you the truth, even if it hurts him. I have no doubt he is pro-life, fully understands the homosexual agenda that is attacking the family, the church and businesses, besides other things, in this country. He believes in the constitution and will appoint conservative judges. I know this is a uphill campaign, but I, like most of Rick supporters, believe in a God of miracles. He's had to fight the money poured out against him, the attack from rinos, the establishment who has done everything but crown romney, and he's still standing. He is going all the way to the convention, if necessary. I just wish him and Newt would get together. I called them the Brainy Bulldog (Newt) and Heart and Soul (RIck). It's all in God's hands. If romney get the nomination, it just might be the beginning of something new.
