Rick Santorum: I may 'sneak' Wisconsin win
Politico ^ | 4/2/12 10:02 AM EDT | MJ LEE

Rick Santorum predicted Monday on the eve of the Wisconsin primary that he may “sneak in and have an upset.”

“We feel good that we’re going to have a good result here in Wisconsin — we’re going to have a strong showing, maybe even sneak in and have an upset,” Santorum said from Green Bay, Wis., in an interview with Fox News. “But either way, we’ll have a strong showing in the face of obviously overwhelming money and overwhelming establishment support [for Romney].”

The former Pennsylvania senator, who is trailing Romney in the delegate race, was dismissive of the increasing GOP establishment support for his rival.

“I think he’s been saying that for a long, long time,” Santorum said of Romney’s most recent predictions that he will be the eventual Republican nominee. “And we’re still here. We just won the last state by 23 points. For someone who’s the eventual nominee – that’s — and by the way, being outspent, and being outspent pretty everywhere we go and yet we’re still hanging in there.”

He added, “The establishment is trying to shove Mitt Romney down the throats of conservatives and tea party folks and hopefully they’ll stand up and say, ‘Nope, the message of 2010 is just as viable now and we need a strong conviction principled conservative.’”

The most recent poll shows Romney leading Santorum in Wisconsin by 7 percentage points, while another survey last week showed the same gap between the two. (Snip)

The Pennsylvania native also made another prediction about the upcoming contest in his home state on April 24.

“Well, absolutely,” Santorum said when asked if he will win that race. “No question about it.”

I thought you wanted to stop Romney so that we would have a brokered convention? If you want that to happen somebody has to win some of these states other than Romney.

So why pick on the guy?

Santorum is making his own display. I merely posted the event. If there was ever any doubt that Santorum is only in this for his own self gratification, look no further than the result of his own denial and grandiose opinions he has of himself.

He is deluded.

The mass fantasy is that Romney is a conservative.

I think you are Ann Coulter. This piece you posted is what a normal person campaigning would say.

They rarely go out and say, “hey, I am not delusional, we ain’t gonna win and we ain’t gonna try”. yee hah

That said, you didn’t answer my question on this thread or the other thread by the way.

Santorum is on third base because of a walk and a couple of passed balls. Poor thing thinks he hit a triple...

That could very well happen. Voter apathy on the Romney side because of “inevitably” might result in a lower turnout and a Santorum victory. It’s not “delusional” to say that could happen. Of course, there are at least equal odds that the reverse will happen. I’m still hoping to stop Mittens. Call me “delusional” all you want, but I’m not quite ready to give up all hope.

I think there are a bunch of freepers here who suddenly are hidden Mittbots, either that or they secretly wish for him to win.

Romney is in this for his own self gratification. I merely report the fact. All four left have big egos.

Doesn’t matter what anyone thinks of Santorum. Fact is, if you want to get to a brokered convention, you have to stop Romney.

If you indeed do want to stop Romney, tearing down the opposition is not exactly in your best interest or the best interest of conservatives.

I wonder how many are in common with the “Zimmerman is GUILTY!” bots...

The is primary season proves the exact reason it is difficult to beat back socialism. Becoming very difficult for the “tea party” types to unite behind a guy to defeat the establishment’s guy. Now some are convinced otherwise that Romney is high and mighty.

They said the same thing you did in Illinois. They were absolutely certain that Santorum would win it, and the margin was only 5 points on the day before the primary.

Don't worry about “voter apathy”. There is a low turn out for every Primary on all sides. And you might want to reframe your definition of “hope”.

You had better “hope” that Santorum does not win, and does the right thing and drops out so we can build a strong offense around a solid candidate to go against Obama.

If this struggle continues much longer, Obama will walk away with it again, because our side of incurably weak and chaotic. That impression alone, will have a major effect on how the ignorant American public votes for a candidate.

And who do you envision that being, if there is not a brokered convention?

Oh...no...I’m so scared. Obama might win a second term! Guess what? The odds of that are just as high if we nominate the GOP’s version of John Kerry as if we fight it to the convention. If you want to back the liberal flip-flopper from Mass., go ahead, but don’t expect me to hop on your bandwagon out of fear of Obama.

I still think Santorum and Romney are within two points of each other here in Wisconsin. I'm sure Romney will garner more votes in the Milwaukee and Madison areas. But the populations from outer areas can and may overcome this. It boils down to voter motivation. Folks are not going to be motivated to come out and vote *for* Romney, but are they sufficiently motivated to come out and vote *against* Romney ... that is the question. Santorum could actually "sneak" a victory here.

You can't see the forest because the trees are in the way.

We do not have to stop Romney. In doing so now, we stop ourselves in the process. NO, our main and only need at the moment, is to stop OBAMA.

Of course Romney is not the greatest candidate we have had, but we can deal with him. His promises to us are too deeply committed for him to betray what he says he will do. There are too many people like us who will hold him to it.

And the first thing we need to do to stop this, is remove Obama from office, not guarantee his second term with a candidate who will lose. If we drag this out any further, that alone will be a threat to us winning.

Like Ryan and company now say, a brokered convention would be a disaster, which leads me to reframe my former thinking. I can plainly see where they are coming from and have to admit, they are right. And since Newt is no longer even a remote possibility, either now or if a brokered convention is forced, we have run out of logical options.
