Mitt Romney's Sinking Approval Ratings
The New Republic ^ | April 2, 2012 | Ed Kilgore

Posted on 04/03/2012 8:56:15 AM PDT by throwback

Last week was a pretty good one for Mitt Romney. He moved ahead of Rick Santorum in the polls in Wisconsin. His lead in national polls of Republicans increased as well. And he continued to get prominent endorsements from star conservatives like Marco Rubio and Paul Ryan, indicating a party moving in his direction. But despite all this encouraging news, there was a cloud on Romney’s horizon: his terrible approval ratings.

How terrible? According to a new ABC News-Washington Post survey, only 34 percent of Americans view Romney favorably (“the lowest for any leading presidential candidate in ABC/Post polls in primary seasons since 1984”). And 50 percent of Americans rate Romney unfavorably—that’s higher than any unfavorability score Obama has received ever.

Needless to say, this is not what you want to hear when you’re still busy courting your party’s most extremist voters in an effort to nail down the nomination. In fact, Romney’s record-low ratings probably have a lot to do with this year’s extended primary. John McCain, for example, was doing much better at this point in 2008, with a 54-40 approval/disapproval rating—but he had already won the nomination. According to ABC/Post, Romney’s unfavorability score has been exceeded “by only one top candidate in 28 years, Hillary Clinton in 2008.” It’s no accident that the past candidate who actually exceeds Romney’s unfavorable is Clinton, who was also still in a highly competitive nomination contest at the end of March.

A big part of Romney’s problem, as ABC’s Gary Langer explains in his analysis of the new poll, is that “core Republican voters” don’t much like him—in sharp contrast to Obama, whose troubles with the Democratic base seem to be over:

It is The New Republic, but still interesting. The author's saying Romney needs to move left "slowly and carefully". I guess that's why the Party wants this done now, so there's time.

This is exactly why Ubama has been maneuvering to male Myth the GOP nominee for the past three and a half years.

He's probably the only Republican he could beat.

Wait until the real attacks begin.

0bama will be walking on water (again) before the MSM is finished with Romney.

“And he continued to get prominent endorsements from star conservatives”

Oh yea, like Bush 41, Bob Dole and John McCain, real conservatives.

When I heard that he’s building a $30 million house in Malibu, during this run; I knew it was over.

Then lo and behold, it’s the first thing Howard Dean mentions.

I’ll still vote for him of course, but will the so called “independents” in Ohio-Florida vote for him? They will decide this thing. With Romney’s out of touch arrogance of building a super house in a movie star location, during the election of his life; I’m less sure than ever.

Mitt Romney is the ONE Republican most likely to lose to Obama in 2012.

It’s amazing that we some how appear to have ended up with him of all people.

I honestly couldn’t have created a worse candidate to run against Obama in November than Romney.

“Who “approved” of Romney in the first place?”

The elite RINOs and their approval of the money he coughs up for them.

Basic simple reality is that Romney and Gingrich are both capable of beating Obama, the one shot we’ve ever had at losing this thing is Rick Santorum. Getting blown out of a US senate race as a two term incumbent is an astonishing feat, there probably haven’t been more than two or three US politicians in the history of the republic who ever could have managed it.

Who “approved” of Romney in the first place?

The "It's his turn" crowd. Then when they discovered to their horror that the rubes weren't buying it, they doubled down and enlisted the aid of Ann Coulter. And when we still expressed our disgust with Bishop Romney, they told Romney to open his pocketbook to buy a bunch of endorsements.

Still isn't working.

I don’t get this. I’m a Newt fan that’s losing hope, but how can you say Romney is less electable than McCain? I can’t think of anyone less electable than one who suspends a campaign months before the election to work on a $700 billion bailout.

There's no enthusiasm for Romney.

Once again the moronic majority primary voters go with "it's his turn."

It's almost baffling how we get the candidates we get for POTUS, let alone the nominee and the winners.

Not to mention the party operatives who have tilted the table in his favor. In Michigan the race was a tie till a late night after the vote rule change handed Romney a two delegate lead.

It may not seem like much but the media gets the narrative they need.

I’m sorry, but this is BS. Let’s see if the poll sampled 60% Democrats.
