Visiting Marquette Univ., Justice Kagan tells of hunting with Scalia
Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel ^ | 4 April 2012 | Bruce Vielmetti

Though she's not running for anything, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan almost sounded as if she were trying to score points with Wisconsin outdoorsmen Tuesday during a conversation at Marquette University.

Kagan, a New York City native who had no experience with guns when she was named to the court in 2010, said she's now used them several times with colleague Antonin Scalia.

"He's made a huntress out of me," Kagan told Mike Gousha, host of "On the Issues" at Marquette's law school - and about 240 law students listening in on their talk. The justices have bagged pheasant and quail, and plan to go after bigger game out West this fall.

"He insists I'm going to shoot myself an antelope," Kagan said. That's fine with her, she said, because she's come to view hunting as "really good fun."

Displaying the ease and charm that carried her to confirmation, and probably makes her popular at cocktail parties, Kagan shared her impressions of her career and the court. She was in town at the invitation of Marquette Law School Dean Joseph Kearney, who said the two met at a conference for new law deans in 2003. He invited her last year to judge Marquette's 2012 moot court competition, which was held Tuesday night.

In an hourlong discussion with Gousha, Kagan talked about how her prior experience as a teacher, Harvard Law School dean, solicitor general and White House adviser informs her work as a justice. She of course did not go anywhere near last week's historic argument on the Affordable Care Act, and the audience knew better than to ask.

How adorable. Hope this “news” reaches all the tree hugging, liberal PETA supporters she has. I’ll bet if you look hard enough, you can find papers she has written calling for the outlawing of hunting.

"He insists I'm going to shoot myself an antelope," Kagan said.

I like most of this quote very much ... all the way up to where she starts talking about antelopes.

"He insists I'm going to shoot myself an antelope," Kagan said.

Actually, his exact words were: "Cripes! Be careful! You're going to shoot yourself, you stupid cow!!"

Way to go Scalia.. The only way to transform someone’s life is to be a part of it. It is the original Christian model. Not to mention the Garden of Eden model. If we could all do this, instead of isolating ourselves into our VWR corner. I am soo guilty of that as well. Being around liberals makes me nauseous. Any pointers Scalia?

As of today, the US Government has stopped allowing hunting of the dama gazelle & two other exotic African antelopes & has given them full protection under the federal Endangered Species Act. Texas ranchers have been raising the antelopes for hunting - now, they can’t afford to keep the herds, can’t legally kill them and they cannot release them. The ranchers can apply for federal permits to continue the hunts, but most won’t because they say it is government intrusion. The animal activists are happy.

Don’t feel bad, it’s easier for the elite on the right who are sheltered from the worst repercussions of liberal government(ie, exempting themselves from ObamaCare). We live down here at the bottom of the power hill. I know I despise and can’t stand to interact with liberals. Through their ignorance or apathy, they make life for us a constant struggle to retain our God-given freedom and right of self-determination. It’s hard to deal with people who do that to their fellow citizens.

Justice Kagan had better not turn too quickly, or she might get a load of birdshot in the face....

Amen, and well said.

I think Kagan might end up surprising us. She’s liberal but she’s far from stupid. IF the conservative world view is in fact the righteous world view — and at least you and I must believe it is, ‘cause we’re here on FR — then it stands to reason that a thinking person with integrity can be swayed to abandon liberalism and embrace conservatism.

FRegards

Maybe Scalia will also teach her to respect the Constitution.

If I were a Texas gazelle rancher, I would load my herd into my stock trailer, drive them up to Washington, D.C. and open my trailer door on K Street.

Wouldn't it be a blessing if Kagan turned into the Left's David Souter?
