PLEASANT VIEW -

A suspected burglar is under arrest after getting shot while trying to break into a house in Shelby County. It happened around 3:30 am Thursday.

Police say the man, who police have identified as Reginald A. Daniels, 19, from the Fountaintown area in Shelby County, tried to break in the front door of a house on Sycamore Road in the Prairie View neighborhood.

Investigators say he broke through a side panel and was reaching in trying turn the knob from the inside when the homeowner fired a single shot, hitting the suspect in the hip.

"The homeowner gave him every opportunity to go away. In fact, he wished he would have. He wouldn't and the homeowner, by his credit, he waited until the last possible moment to protect his family and that's what he had to do," said Det. Dan Crafton, Shelby County Sheriff's Department.

There was about a five-minute delay in the police response to the shooting since, detectives say, the initial 911 call was received by Marion County Dispatch and had to be routed to Shelby County. The neighborhood is very close to the Marion-Shelby County line.

Detectives say the homeowner will not be charged. It's unclear what charges the suspect will face.

Police believe he intended to get into a different house but was confused. Authorities haven't released the name of the suspect, who is being treated at Wishard Hospital for the gunshot wound. Detectives plan to interview him at the hospital.

Many criminals, perhaps a majority, are drunk or drugged when they commit their crimes.

"MAY" have had the wrong home?

I don't see any doubt about it...

Would it not STILL have been a crime for him to burglarize the “right” house?

It’s poorly written. They mean he may have thought he was locked out of his own home and was trying to get in...

Agree “It’s poorly written”

This story does not tell us who is black or white, how are we to know who’s right or wrong

The stupidity of "journalists" truly boggles the mind. They through out these meaningless facturds without comment, as if we're all on the same acid trip, or ecstasy high, with them, and know exactly what they mean.

I have no idea what that line is supposed to mean and of course the "journalist" isn't about to enlighten us.

They are really, seriously unbelievably stupid.

Poorly written is right! They released his name, but didn’t release his name!

It certainly doesn't read like that. It reads like the perp meant to burglarize a different house. (Though how they would know that they don't deign to mention.)

If it truly is a case of some innocent guy, maybe drunk, forgetting his keys, thinking he's home... if it really is that and this story was written like THIS???

Then the writers are even stupider than I thought they were.

In my town we passed an ordinance forbidding anyone from committing a criminal act without first ingesting the equivalent of a 12 pack of beer. It’s a point of pride that we’ve never had to enforce the ordinance.

Most likely a drunk. I doubt he’ll be charged with anything under the circumstances, unless the homeowner wants to press charges.

Because breaking a window to get into your house when you are locked out should always be the very first thing that you do.

It’s poorly written. They mean he may have thought he was locked out of his own home and was trying to get in...

Then he must have wondered who was in his home shouting, "Stop or I'll shoot!" or whatever the resident said by way of "doing everything he could to avoid shooting".
