~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Naval Meteorology And Oceanography Command, Mississippi

Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command is a third echelon operational command reporting to Commander, Fleet Forces Command. The command's personnel are located at its headquarters at John C. Stennis Space Center near Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, and at several field activities located around the world.

The Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command traces its ancestry to the Depot of Charts and Instruments, a 19th century repository for nautical charts and navigational equipment. In the 1840s, its superintendent, Lieutenant Matthew Fontaine Maury, created and published a revolutionary series of wind and current charts.

This information, still resident in modern computer models of ocean basins and the atmosphere, laid the foundation for the sciences of oceanography and meteorology.

Atmospheric science was further developed with the birth of naval aviation early in the 20th century. During World War I and the following decades, naval aerological specialists applied the fledgling concepts of air masses and fronts to warfare and provided forecasts to the first transatlantic flight.

The Navy's weather and ocean programs contributed greatly to Allied victory in World War II. In the Pacific, Navy forecasters cracked the Japanese weather code. Hydrographic survey ships, often under enemy fire, collected data along foreign coastlines for the creation of critical navigation charts.

In the mid-1970s, the Navy's meteorology and oceanography programs were integrated in a single organization reflecting nature's close interaction of sea and air. This structure is today the Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command.

The Command's major subordinate activities include the Naval Oceanographic Office, located at Stennis Space Center; Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center, located in Monterey, Calif.; the Naval Observatory, located in Washington, D.C.; the Naval Oceanography Operations Command, located at Stennis Space Center; and the Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Professional Development Center located in Gulfport, Miss

The command is aligned to and focused on the Navy's five warfighting disciplines - Anti-Submarine Warfare; Special Warfare; Mine Warfare; Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance; and Fleet Operations (Strike and Expeditionary) - as well as the following warfighting support disciplines: Navigation, Precise Time and Astrometry, Maritime Operations and Aviation Operations.

The Power Of Soft Answers

April 10, 2012

My car broke down in a tunnel during rush hour in downtown Boston. Angry drivers expressed their frustration as they struggled past me. Eventually, the car was towed to a station for repairs. Later it broke down again, stranding me along the Interstate at 2 a.m. Back to the shop it went.

Unfortunately, the repair shop also doubled as a parking lot during Red Sox baseball games. When I arrived after work the next day to pick up my car, it was hemmed in by 30 other vehicles!

Let’s just say I was less than Christlike in my initial reaction. I ranted and raved, and then, realizing it was only making them less willing to help me at the close of their day, I decided to give up. I stormed toward the glass doors and struggled to get them open. My anger increased when the station workers laughed at me.

I had barely made it out when I realized how unlike Christ I’d been. Chastened, I rapped on the locked doors and mouthed “I’m sorry” to the staff inside. They were stunned! They let me back in, and I meekly told them that Christians shouldn’t behave as I had. Minutes later, they were shifting cars to free up mine. I learned the truth that soft rather than harsh words can change circumstances (Prov. 15:1).

O may I find in anger’s grip
The strength to temper tongue and lip;
But failing that, may God grant me
The courage for apology. —Kilgore
A soft answer has often been
the means of breaking a hard heart.

Read: Proverbs 15:1-4

A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. —Proverbs 15:1
Bible in a Year:
2 Kings 15-17

Aloha, Biglook! I hope you had a Blessed and Happy Easter! My number 3 son turns sixteen tomorrow. He's our cancer survivor - diagnosed shortly after his 5th birthday. Spent a year in weekly chemo and six weeks in daily radiation treatment. We almost lost him to a C. difficile infection during treatment, but he pulled through. I thought I knew about courage after coming home from the war - David showed me dimensions of courage I had not previously seen.

It went very well, thanks! We deviated from the classic Easter Dinner and had ribeyes on the grill. My youngest son, John Man, did the grilling. He hit a home run - they were excellent! - A nice Old Vine Zinfandel (Rubus) to accompany it.

We went to the 12:00 Noon Liturgy at our church - standing room only. Those twice a year Christians were there in force. A beautiful Liturgy - one of my friends served as cantor- wonderful music! A very satisfying Easter!
