KODIAK, Alaska Two Coast Guard members were fatally shot at a communications station on an island off Alaska, officials said today.
Officials said it remained unclear if the deaths at the Coast Guard Station on Kodiak Island were a double homicide or a murder-suicide. Capt. Jesse Moore said it was possible that the suspect remains at large.
The communications station has 59 staff members, and people who want to enter must show identification, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Charly Hengen.
They do have secure front doors, she said.
The station serves as the ears in the sky for radio transmissions from mariners and aircraft, Hengen said, and is responsible for relaying distress calls to the air station of the Coast Guard in Anchorage.
There is a commanding officer and enlisted and civilian personnel at the station, which is about eight miles from the islands largest city of Kodiak, Hengen said.
Officials said the base and nearby schools were on lockdown. Moore told the citys 6,300 or so residents to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to local law enforcement officials until more details emerge.

Two Coast Guardsmen at the Kodiak Base Communications Station are confirmed dead after a shooting there this morning.
Base Support Unit Captain Jesse Moore says the suspect in the shooting may still be at large, and he advises all Kodiak residents to keep an eye out for suspicious activity.
Moore said the base personnel are deeply saddened by the loss of two shipmates.
State, local, and federal law enforcement authorities are working with the military police to investigate the shootings.
The names of the deceased have not been released pending notification of next of kin.
The base and Petersen Elementary School are on lock down until further notice.
Praying for our Coasties.
I don’t understand how you don’t know if it was a double homicide or murder suicide...
I hear these COMMSTA KOdiak guys on the radio every day that I am at work.
Prayers up for their families.
This sounds like one of the first X-Files episodes.
Since the shooter is still “at large” they haven’t found him (murder) or a body (suicide)
Total wonderment.....ping
Wait until the Rooskies reveal what they found in the giant underground lake below 6 miles of ice.
sad story, rugged duty, beautiful place .. Tonk Bump!
Strange...
If it was a murder-suicide, you’d think that would be fairly clear. But a double murder in a secure facility? That sounds maybe like a love triangle gone bad. It shouldn’t be to hard to figure out who’s missing.
Yah. Former Coastie here... Been to Kodak several times. It’s a gorgeous place.
From the ADN at 1302 Alaska time....
About 60 people work at the communications station. It sits 3 miles north of the Coast Guard's Base Support Unit Kodiak, which is about 7 miles from the city of Kodiak.
An affair that went wrong, or someone wanted an affair and nothing happened.
Sad to say, I thought the same thing.
Its not time for Eugene Victor Tooms to show up again yet, is it?
An Ali Acki Bar incident would have left more dead and wounded.
Thanks! We visited Kodiak close to 25 years ago as part of a 2 week cruise, it was cold and rainy but the coffee was hot and folk hospitable!
My prayers go out to those who brave that region in boats, ships and planes not mention puddle jumpers and helis and to the families and friends who lost loved ones today.
