The principles of openness and universal access that underpinned the creation of the internet three decades ago are under greater threat than ever, according to Google co-founder Sergey Brin.
In an interview with the Guardian, Brin warned there were "very powerful forces that have lined up against the open internet on all sides and around the world". "I am more worried than I have been in the past," he said. "It's scary."
The threat to the freedom of the internet comes, he claims, from a combination of governments increasingly trying to control access and communication by their citizens, the entertainment industry's attempts to crack down on piracy, and the rise of "restrictive" walled gardens such as Facebook and Apple, which tightly control what software can be released on their platforms.

Bastages all!
Who was it that said: "What government can't control, it will seek to destroy..."?
Since I hate all things Apple and Facebook, on this point I agree with him. Not sure where Google will end up but at least at this point, they’re better. Not too evil.
Too bad Google supports the totalitarians
Hasn’t the leader of Google held a few big time Obama fundraisers?
It’s what the Left does. Lead everyone down a path of their choosing.

When it comes to Internet freedom the Google boys will drop Obumster quicker than you can say ‘hot potato’, bet on it!
Where is this from, the Onion?
Hey Sergey, I need to find an article I was researching last November 18th at 6:47pm, please send me my surveillance log for that time, thanks so much.
In other news, Hillary expressed grave concerns about the strategy of targeted personal destruction of political enemies.
No doubt... and if you own the Biggest operation in any form of Commerce you better Kowtow to the leftists by way of lots of Campaign cash no matter what your politics are. If not you will be hauled before Congress or pounced on by the EPA and or the Federal Safety Agencies not to mention the IRS.
Remember the Clintoons hammering on Microsoft in the 90s? Or more recently The Obama Admin landing on Gibson Guitars for importing "Unfinished wood" for use in guitar necks (Which BTW every other US guitar manufacturer does as well But they didn't get shut down/investigated. The difference being they all contributed heavily to the leftists.)
Bottom line is I don't hold such against companies because more and more it has become a survival mechanism for these Big businesses. Its when the go out of there way to ONLY support leftists then I get concerned.
That doesn't really affect the Web. You don't like them, don't use them.
Apple has the potential to effect the web by not allowing other browser engines, so they could make non-standard changes to Safari to force web sites to change if they don't want to alienate tens of millions of mobile users. However, Apple has a solid history of supporting standards to a high degree with Safari, so that's not likely.
The only problem I have with Google is they store ALL search requests, its why I don't login to my Google account very much because not only do they store your IP address but all of your account info as well if you search while logged in.
They claim they do such for business reasons but who knows. However if one is worried about such do as I do and use proxy servers when doing searches.
However what really concerns me now is that the White House Brokered a deal with BIG MEDIA and the RIAA/MPAA and the ISPs back in December 2011 which allows the ISPs to Throttle an ISP customer's connection or even cancel their account and disconnect them if they are ACCUSED by the RIAA/MPAA of downloading Copyrighted Material without permission or paying for it. Now IIRC in the American System of Government you used to have to be proved guilty before you were punished> But now because the RIAA/MPAA can't get Illegal downloading shutdown through the court system they are just gonna just bypass the legal system and go straight to punishment.
(The reason why they wish to do such is because they started losing cases and had to pay court costs when Judges finally figured out that when wireless networks are involved its near impossible to prove who did what without a physical hard drive and the RIAA/MPAA had several cases go bad when they would drag the ISP customer's computer into court and find no trace whatsoever of illegal downloading because such had been done on another computer that connected to the network via wireless connection. They even sued a woman who had been dead at the time the records showed illegal downloading had occurred (Her house had been shut up but the wireless router had been left on while the property was in probate.)
So all they had to do was get with Barry and the Boys and the ISPs and get Barry to agree not to have the FCC pounce on the ISPs because of the privacy concerns and then they pumped some cash into Barry's Coffers and Bing Bang Boom. They can discipline anyone they ACCUSE of illegal downloading whether they actually did it or not. Which I am sure makes Old Barry Hussein Obama salivate at the possibilities!
BTW this officially starts in July so if you got a Wireless Connection I would do a security test on it and check your router logs to make sure no one has hacked your system. Its a lot more common than people think especially if you live in a highly populated area.
Sort of like how they cooperated with the commie chinks to restrict the free flow of information. Or their contributions to Nelson Mandela, etc.
He's a hypocrite of the worst sort and he's worried about his business. He tracks the net habits of people, then sells the information to advertisers. More browsers are enabling us to hide our habits. The government will more so. That's a bad thing to the pimps at google.
This jackhole who drooled all over obama and is the perp who has a cozy relationship with the NSA is now bitching about the loss of freedom on the web? Pot meet kettle.
Google cache results are returned in searches but they no longer are displayed (haven’t been for several years now).
Big Media is all too happy to have their past transgressions wiped from the record.
That’s not leading, that’s herding.
Is there a word for something being ironic and pathetic at the same time?
Glad I'm not the only one who remembers that.
China says "Jump", Google asks "How high?" on the way up.
Google Is Evil™.
