Mitt Romney, it turns out, was against calling stay-at-home mothers working moms before he was for it.
MSNBCs Chris Hayes broke the news this morning. Back in January, Romney appeared at a town hall even in Manchester, New Hampshire, where he explained his position on welfare.
While I was governor, Romney said, 85 percent of the people on a form of welfare assistance in my state had no work requirement. I wanted to increase the work requirement. I said, for instance, that even if you have a child two years of age, you need to go to work. And people said, Well thats heartless, and I said No, no, Im willing to spend more giving daycare to allow those parents to go back to work. Itll cost the state more providing that daycare, but I want the individuals to have the dignity of work.
Read that again: I want the individuals to have the dignity of work. And by individuals, Romney means mothers.

Wait, there’s a huge difference between staying at home, and the financial sacrifices that comes with that, and sitting on your a$$ and expecting the taxpayers to pick up the tab. It is more dignified to work than to take handouts.
I’ve had to work, so that we didn’t rely on taxpayer subsidies, so I have no patience for those who stay at home, on my dime. Now I am home with my kids, but only because my husband worked two jobs for years, and I still work from home.
I’m with Mitt on this one.
Welfare checks are no substitutes for Husbands.
Well, Romney is a liberal, so I get that he wouldn’t like “stay at home moms”.
He was talking about welfare moms. How low will the romney haters go.
The really great thing about this severe moderate is that if you don’t like his position on anything, you only have to wait a few spins until he rotates to a position you can approve.
How low will Romneybots go to defend him?
I'm pretty sure there is a ways to go yet.
You’re exactly right. I have to say I agree with his position back in January. I wonder if he would stand by it now.
“He was talking about welfare moms. How low will the romney haters go”
Not necessary to go very far at all.
Have you read any of the complaints against Romney?
How do you feel about Ann Coulter?
This article is a sad substitute for the truth, but since welfare whores and democrats don’t see why the government shouldn’t replace the role of husband, this kind of trash will be given some weight.
It’s also why they are proponents of abusive relationships.
Every Romney hit piece I read in the MSM has moved me closer to voting for him. Every single one.
Bingo.
So in your view, it's a conservative position to "stay at home" with your kids and let the government give you a check every month?
Sounds perfect to me.
Romney against moms who stay at home? Thanks Romney for making this an easy decision for me.
I am a 70 year old female widow living on $935 a month. I don’t own a home, it isn’t easy but i do it. I don’t buy anything i can’t afford, and I don’t expect my children to support me. I made sure that all of my children had good educations, so that they would not be in the same position that I am in. I don’t blame anyone but myself for where I am in life. Would I go back and change things if I had the chance, you bet. I have never depended on the government for anything and don’t intend to.
