Mail Carriers Try Own Rescue: Raising Stamp Prices Is Central to Postal Union's Plan
Wall street Journal ^ | 4-17-12 | JENNIFER LEVITZ

The nation's largest mail-carriers union wants the U.S. Postal Service to raise stamp prices and expand mail delivery.

In a report to be released Tuesday, it sharply criticizes the agency's own rescue plan and argues the Postal Service will become profitable only if it restructures itself like a business.

Labor groups, for instance, generally oppose cuts to service. The mailing industry opposes higher postage fees. Many legislators say the Postal Service needs to close facilities—but not in their district. And a Republican-led bill set to be heard by the full House looks askance at any proposal that would allow the Postal Service to compete with private industry. That bill's backers say the agency should act like a business—to a point

Yeah, that’s the answer. Any successful company will charge more for their product when fewer people are wanting it rather than layoff excessive workers. Yeah, that’s good thinking.

Haven’t bought a stamp in over 15 years and UPS has great package delivery.

They have to get congressional approval for raising prices. UPS and others can raise prices as needed.

Around here, UPS and Fed Ex both deliver to the post office anyway.

In the last week, I have gotten two catalogs, one “Hungry Howie’s Pizza” ad, a local newspaper and a AAA magazine.

They could cut mail delivery down to once a week and it would work for me.

They could raise stamps to $5 each for all I care. I could probably count on one hand how many I buy in a year. That’s their problem.

Come on, this brilliant technique can be used for better retirements too. Whatcha griping about, laweeks - get with the program. Raise the price of stamps to $50.00 each - and every dream and desire postal workers have will come true. Extra cash can be used to feel unicorns... It's a win, win, win....

If they can make you buy health insurance, they can make you buy postage stamps......

I had to use a stamp to file my local taxes the other day. I believe the last time before that was a year ago for the same reason. Closing all post offices would work for me. I really don’t like getting bills and junk mail.

Honestly, I have seen that in more than a few industries. Publishing is the most recent.

It is usually followed by guilt tripping customers, lobbying Congress to outlaw competition, and asking for a bailout.

Stupid, but the USPS isn't the only, over even the worst, at this. Many major “private” industries do the same thing.
