I hope they cancel the race. It’s a stupid track from T4 on, it just meanders until one of the straights. Too many 1st gear turns and it’s all freakin’ desert, so featureless. I know, I’ve raced there in online races (RACE 07). I hate it. The track from a few years ago was OK, though.

this is actually huge in the sport of Formula 1....the Bahrain GP was cancelled last year because of the unrest in the country and there was a lot of concern about holding this years event...a lot of the teams were worried and there has been a lot of back and forth about the race....F1 grand poobah Bernie Eccelstone and the FIA are gonna to be in big trouble if there are problems at the race and look like fools if there’s a last minute cancel...

"setting off street battles and sending visitors fleeing for cover"

Perhaps they should modify the cars a bit, and 'kill two birds with one stone'

In many of the recent F1 races, the top qualifier runs ahead 20+ seconds and wins, poll to poll.

So a little sidewhow shootout may be what Ecclestone is actually after.

Jihad is so contemporary, proving the sport is up to date and internationally aware, etc.

As for me, between the Sunnis and Shiites, I say eff them all, cancell all future races for the duration of jihad.

They didn’t hold races in the communist bloc during the cold war.

Since Iran is backing the anti-government forces in Bahrain, real possibility of terrorist attack planned and financed by Iran.
Not sure why F1 is taking the risk.

Force India members leave Bahrain
ESPNF1 Staff
April 19, 2012 «

Two members of the Force India team have been allowed to leave Bahrain following an incident outside the circuit on Wednesday night.

Four mechanics were returning to the team’s hotel shortly after nightfall when they were delayed by a clash between protestors and police on the main motorway back to the capital to Manama. In the incident a petrol bomb landed near the team’s hire van, but nobody was injured and the vehicle was not damaged.

Paul di Resta says that “there is an edge to things” in Bahrain after two Force India team members decided to leave the country on security grounds.

Following an incident that saw four Force India mechanics caught up in a violent clash between protesters and police, two team members requested they be allowed to return home. Nico Hulkenberg said that it isn’t right that the team is exposed to such situations, and di Resta admitted that

Thanks for the ping! I came across the following on-topic article today while browsing the Asia Times Online site (I go there at times to see if "Spengler" has posted anything new). Perhaps of interest:

The fast and furious Sunni revenge

whoa...

For The Fast White Man, these are only distant rumblings in barbarous lands. What if anybody who buys a ticket to the Bahrain Grand Prix is supporting a murderous, regressive and locally unpopular Sunni dynasty? The sheikhs themselves couldn't care less either. So let's all have fun with the drenched-in-blood-and-champagne Arab Spring Grand Prix.

I think the author made at least one grave error: they don’t allow champagne there. IIRC the bubbly stuff for the victors is some carbonated, rose-scented, but non-alcoholic concoction.
