1 in 2 new graduates are jobless or underemployed (and the idiots will still vote for Obama)

The college class of 2012 is in for a rude welcome to the world of work.

A weak labor market already has left half of young college graduates either jobless or underemployed in positions that don’t fully use their skills and knowledge.

Young adults with bachelor’s degrees are increasingly scraping by in lower-wage jobs — waiter or waitress, bartender, retail clerk or receptionist, for example — and that’s confounding their hopes a degree would pay off despite higher tuition and mounting student loans.

An analysis of government data conducted for The Associated Press lays bare the highly uneven prospects for holders of bachelor’s degrees.

Opportunities for college graduates vary widely.

While there’s strong demand in science, education and health fields, arts and humanities flounder. Median wages for those with bachelor’s degrees are down from 2000, hit by technological changes that are eliminating midlevel jobs such as bank tellers. Most future job openings are projected to be in lower-skilled positions such as home health aides, who can provide personalized attention as the U.S. population ages.

Taking underemployment into consideration, the job prospects for bachelor’s degree holders fell last year to the lowest level in more than a decade.

“I don’t even know what I’m looking for,’’ says Michael Bledsoe, who described months of fruitless job searches as he served customers at a Seattle coffeehouse. The 23-year-old graduated in 2010 with a creative writing degree.

Political Science is the premiere requirement to move on into Law School, so I take it your university didn't do Law.

So, what do they do for donors?

The 23-year-old graduated in 2010 with a creative writing degree.

I Googled creative writing degree since I have no idea what the hell one does with it after earning one, if that what you would call it...

Seems like it is to give a person an advantage in writing a book to get published...I wonder how many well known authors have a degree in creative writing....My bet very few

Maybe a real degree in literature might be more worth while in advancing ones ability to write a book....

We’ve been in full-on hiring mode for more than the last two years...nearly every department. Well-paying, excellent benefits. I’ve needed Mechanical Engineers in the worst way for at least 18 months.

If you’re an Engineer - consider the Bluegrass State your new home and come on down!

We’re fortunate. Our daughter is graduating in May and has received two job offers. Taking that unpaid internship over the summer and then spending her nights and weekends waiting tables definitely paid off.

http://college.indiana.edu/programs/ Using my alma mater as an example ~ they have nearly 300 majors available (many in the Business School) but you can read through the list here and notice they even have a Sanskrit concentration ~ that’s for a special kind of language major who attends this school ~ which is where Air Force has been sending its intelligence agents for decades (as have others of that sort). This is what you call LIBERAL ARTS ~ right down to Mathematical Modeling and Medicine.

http://iub.edu/~mfawrite/?page_id=32 Notice that Creative Writing is offered only as a minor for undergraduate studies, but there’s an MFA FOR graduate level (60 hours over 3 years). Reading through the requirements to get in it looks like you probably ought to be a professional writer first! I’d imagine most folks have no idea what the MFA is about ~

I hope, somehow, after this fiasco, the culture returns to a force that understands how to ‘create value’. Back in the ‘90’s, we knew after all this stealing from each other, the piper was going to be paid. When depends on how long they keep putting off the necessary pain. And there will be pain!

All through history, people migrate to where conditions are more favorable - no reason for that to change now!

If you’re out of work - go where the work is!

College graduates who majored in zoology, anthropology, philosophy, art history and humanities were among the least likely to find jobs appropriate to their education level; those with nursing, teaching, accounting or computer science degrees were among the most likely.

Maybe these idiots should have actually done a bit of research on what jobs are actually out there instead of just imaging that their dream job will be waiting for them in a low demand field?

We're fully expecting our two youngest to have to live at home for a bit, even if they do get jobs right away. They'll need to start paying off their college loans, and if they can only find lower paying jobs to start with, not having to pay full rent, utilities, etc, will be a help.

They took on all their own loans; we didn't take on any of that debt, so we'd be happy to help them get on their feet. They're great kids, and we enjoy being with them. They got degrees in Economics/Math, and Computer Science, so they might have a leg up on the Social Science and Liberal Arts majors, but there's no telling what's out there for them.

“Everyone is always telling you, `Go to college,’’’ Edwards said. “But when you graduate, it’s kind of an empty cliff.’’

Thanks for straightening—or attempting to straighten out—some of these ignoramuses who confuse job training with education. Some, though, are beyond hope since they know exactly how the world works.

Amen! When my oldest boy decided to major in “film” I nearly had a collapse. Yes, he is creative, but NOT some savant. I explained how important it was to get a degree in a field that one could actually find employment in - I got nowhere. He has never worked in the film industry. He did have a job for six months as a video cassette monkey at a small local news station. He hated that. Never has found steady work and hates the world.

My youngest took my advice, and got a part time job at 16 years old. Toughed it out until he got out of high school, then before entering COMMUNITY college, he traded up to a job at Lowes making $1.25 more per hour.

He had tough times, not being a great student while being a super intelligent human (dyslexia) but he got his associates in Science. Went on to a great State collage, which happens to be walking distance from the home I shared with my new hubby, so we convinced him to stay with us to save TONS and TONS of money.

Still struggles with studies - molecular bio - but he didn’t quit. Still works at Lowes, makes close to what the managers do, heh, and should graduate this spring.

He is conservative, but a little “socially” liberal, decent balance as it comes from empathy rather than influence of the progressives.

Bottom line - he has worked since he was 16 at menial jobs, but never quit, never was out of work. Got his assoc. degree in spite of falling down a lot, his bach. should give him lots of opportunities in many science related fields.

Yes, I talked at him A LOT about going into studies that would land him a good job with a real future.

“Just look at your brother”, I said.

I believe that helped a great deal.
