Bill ‘Moose’ Skowron, hero of the Yankees’ 1958 World Series team, dead at 81
NY DAILY NEWS ^ | 04/27/12 | Bill Madden

Skowron, a four-time All-Star, was the Yankees’ regular first baseman from 1955-62, averaging 21 homers and 75 RBI and finished his career with a .282 average, 211 homers and 888 RBI. He was especially lethal in the World Series in which he compiled a .293 average, eight homers and 29 RBI in 39 games over eight Fall Classics.

In the 1956 World Series for the Yankees, Skowron had been held hitless by the Dodgers until the seventh game when he came to bat with the bases loaded in the seventh inning and hit a grand slam homer into the left field stands to break the game open. Two years later, Skowron spurred the Yankees to a comeback from three games to one against the Braves by singling home what proved to be the winning run in the 10th inning of their Game 6 4-3 victory, then hit a decisive three-run eighth-inning homer off Yankee killer Lew Burdette for the 6-2 Game 7 win.

I had that card (Topps '67). I wonder what it would be worth today? On the other hand... I don't think I'd want to know. I had a Mickey Mantle from that year, too. And Hank Aaron. And Carl Yastrzemski...

RIP, Moose.

Probably no more than a buck. As a kid, I had all the cards that were the best of the 50s, but put them all into the spokes on my bike. Hey - I was cooool.
Good story here - "The Rise and Fall of Baseball Cards."

I discovered when I was 8 that if I cut my brothers BB cards semi in half, I could put two together and make great cross beams for building multilevel card houses....I also discovered that I could scream and run very fast when he found out what I had done...

Ted’s first year as the Senator’s manager was ‘69. The Moose was out of MLB by then.

I loved Moose Skowron. He was a great guy, and I enjoyed when he would sit in during White Sox broadcasts in recent years. I’m so sorry to hear of his passing. RIP, Moose. God bless the Skowron family.

That’s correct, but at my age then and my age now I may have merged the two, but I do remember seeing both, just not at the same time I guess.

I have Ted’s autograph....
